A shooting took place on Tuesday morning at Great Mills High School in Maryland, where a 17-year-old opened fire, hitting two students before being confronted by a school resource officer who shot and killed him.

The shooter, 17-year-old Austin Wyatt Rollins fired a Glock 9mm handgun at a 16-year-old girl, who was critically injured, and a 14-year-old boy, who was listed in good condition Tuesday.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

The 16-year-old was critically injured and the 14-year-old was listed in good condition.

School resource officer Deputy First Class Blaine Gaskill responded immediately to the report that shots were fired and confronted Rollins on the first floor.  He fired his weapon as Rollins returned fire, but was not hit.
“He responded exactly how we train our personnel to respond,” St. Mary’s County Sheriff Tim Cameron told reporters.

Gaskill fired at the shooter … almost simultaneously as the shooter fired,” Cameron said. “This is something we train, practice and in reality, hope would never come to fruition. This is our worst nightmare.”

Gov. Larry Hogan called Gaskill “a very capable school resource officer who also happened to be a SWAT team member.”

“This is a tough guy who apparently closed in very quickly and took the right kind of action,” he added. “And while I think it’s still tragic, he may have saved other people’s lives.”

Sheriff  Cameron said there is an “indication that a prior relationship existed between the shooter and the female victim.”

However, further details of the relationship were not made available at the time of the statement.

All high schools in St. Mary’s County are staffed with an armed deputy sheriff who works as a school resource officer.

National Rifle Association spokesperson Dana Loesch tweeted, This [Great Mills High School] armed school resource officer, you’re not hearing anyone in #MSM talk about it because it disrupts their narrative.”

“They do take issue with defending our most vulnerable and our most innocent and as a mother, I will never understand that,” she added.

It’s true, just look at CNN’s report on the matter where they seem to mock the fact that a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun.

While the cowards in Broward did nothing with their guns to stop the alleged shooter in Parkland in February, that doesn’t mean they couldn’t have done so.  Furthermore, CNN went on to state that the NRA’s position on this matter is that,

some — most notably, the NRA — held him up as an example of the “good guy with a gun” theory. The theory goes, that bad guys will always find a way to circumvent whatever gun laws are in place. And “to stop a bad guy with a gun,” as NRA head Wayne Lapierre said, “it takes a good guy with a gun.”

Well, it’s simply the truth.   While I disagree with pushing for bigger government in the form of more school resource officers, I can admit that this officer did his job and did it well.

I prefer to go to the root of the problem that exists when it comes to school shootings and that is first that parents take responsibility for their children’s education and their protection.  They can do this by teaching them at home and begin to do so for free.

Second, the infringement on the rights of teachers to keep and bear arms in a “gun free zone,” which is unconstitutional should be eliminated.  Thomas Massie has put forward legislation to do just that.  We need representatives to support it because it supports the Constitution.

President Donald Trump supports letting teachers be armed and even providing armed guards at school, though he throws in the caveat “subject to state law,” which again is violating the rights of the people to keep and bear arms.

As a former supporter of the “assault weapons ban,” Trump has already initiated a ban on bump stocks and raising the age to obtain a rifle from 18 to 21, both of which violate the protections of the Second Amendment and his oath of office.

What we need is a return to obeying the Constitution, not knee-jerk reactions to this madness.  We need to contemplate solutions that work like eliminating federal money to schools and the Department of Education, the elimination of “gun free zones,” where more than 90% of mass shootings take place, government’s hand in restricting and regulating our rights.  Ultimately, this is a restoration of the Second Amendment.

If this were done, it wouldn’t be the wild west, as though there was such a thing.  Rather, we would be a society that seeks to stop evil rather than contemplate it.
