5 Smooth Stones – Giant #5: The 6 Fingered Man

We began this search with posing a question about why David selected 5 smooth stones (1 Sam 17:40). If you missed the first two installments, check out Part 1 here and Part 2 here.

Ever wonder why 5? How many did he need? What lesson is this trying to teach us as we take on the giants of our land? What lessons can we learn as we take on the giants of our own selves?

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

I guess the lesson I’m learning as I ‘age out’ is that before I sling shots, not Jagermeister, but stones, at others, I need to take down the giants in the soil of my own soul. Did I say that was easy? No! Did I say that was necessary? I think our Father and His Son said you could have as much as you want as you obey.

Remember, The Promised Land, the one flowing with milk and honey, had to be cleansed before it could be occupied. That’s the Book of Joshua.

On a side note, Caleb was one of those figures who inspired me many years ago. Remember, it was only Caleb and Joshua who got to enter The Promised Land who also experienced The Exodus out the bondage of Egypt. Joshua wasn’t concerned about retirement. One of the most inspirational verses in Scripture for me is found in Joshua 14, when Caleb gets to choose his reward, his pick of The Land. Listen to what he says.

“And now, behold, the LORD has kept me alive, just as he said, these forty-five years since the time that the LORD spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness. And now, behold, I am this day eighty-five years old. I am still as strong today as I was in the day that Moses sent me; my strength now is as my strength was then, for war and for going and coming. So now give me this hill country of which the LORD spoke on that day, for you heard on that day how the Anakim were there, with great fortified cities. It may be that the LORD will be with me, and I shall drive them out just as the LORD said.” Then Joshua blessed him, and he gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance.” -Joshua 14:10-15

Imagine being 85 years old and choosing the high country because there is still some unfinished business with the giants in the land! He wasn’t worried about government healthcare!

However, let’s get back to our fifth giant. You’ll find him in 2 Samuel 21:20.

“And there was again war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, who had six fingers on each hand, and six toes on each foot, twenty-four in number, and he also was descended from the giants.”

Don’t you love the information in Scripture? I mean, how many nights have you stayed awake wondering about this fella? Why are we told about his anomalies? Why does The Word tell us the sum of all his fingers and toes, 24 in number?

Deuteronomy 29:29 says, “The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.”

Proverbs 25:2 says, “It is the glory of God to keep secret a matter; but the glory of the king is to search it out.”

Job 12:22 says, “He reveals the deep things of darkness, and brings deep shadows into the light.”

Matthew 13:11 says, “And He answered them, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.”

Obviously, there are some deeper things with Giant number 5. We’re not given his name, but he has 6 fingers on each hand and 6 toes on each foot. A total of 24! Why does Our Father want us to have this information?

Here’s some of my thoughts. On one level, he could represent greed, grabbing with both hands. Greed is not a good character quality to have and one we need to purge from our souls. Would coveting fall into this category; always desiring ‘the stuff,’ the carnal material?

Paul spoke to this giant in each of us when he spoke of the enmity between The Spirit and the flesh.

It was Jonathan who took this giant down. Jonathan’s name gives us a hint of how to take down greed, lusts and selfish desires that feed the flesh. His name means, “God Given.” Kill greed with gratefulness. Be thankful for what God gives.

Again, Paul understood this as well, when he told us, “Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world (1 Tim 6 6-7).”

Remember, even Paul struggled. Read Romans 7.

For me, I can’t help but to think there is something to the numbers 6,6,6,6 and then their summary of 24. Do I have the answer? No, but I’m still going to dig as we’re encouraged to in Proverbs 25.

“It is necessary for Me to work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day – night is coming, when no one is able to work.” – John 9:4

Father, may we have the strength to carry on in the coming darkness. Have Mercy on us all.
