If the foundations of a structure – like a house, or a skyscraper – are weakened or destroyed, the structure is, I think you’d agree, in danger of leaning, or crumbling, or perhaps collapsing altogether…
Well, the foundations of a culture are likewise strategically crucial to the peaceful living of its citizens, the prosperity of the people, and the defense of the country from attack. And we should remember that attacks against the right to life, liberty and property can come from the outside – and from the inside.
But what are the foundations of American Law and Liberty that are so important to the integrity of the structure?
Who determined what they should be?
Where are they set forth?
Where do they come from?
In this series of brief programs, we’ll examine the structure and the integrity of the American Constitutional Republic – and yes, we are a republic – not a democracy. By the way, this mistake is made so many times by our leaders and our media that it would make civics teachers cringe (assuming, of course, that there are any civics teachers left!)
Well, maybe that’s a good way to set forth our purpose for this series. Let’s call our discussions “remedial civics”.
In the preamble, our founders said one of the reasons they wrote the Constitution was to preserve the Blessings of Liberty for ourselves and our posterity.
So, shouldn’t we, following their example, dedicate ourselves to learning and passing on the history and heritage of American liberty under law? Let’s do it.
