The Modern Day Christian and His Homemade Jesus

Recently, I received an email from one of your typical “Christian” bookstores.  What struck me in this email, was they had a DVD for children asking the question about what was in the Bible, with a big fat obnoxious smiley faced “Jesus” on the front of it. If they really wanted to find out the truth of what is in the Bible, they would certainly not find a “Jesus” like that, but unfortunately, it didn’t stop there.

Shortly after that, I received another email from the same place advertising a Bible sale they had going on, where you could get the ESV “Action” Study Bible or if that didn’t suit your taste then there was the NIV “First-Century” Study Bible. Hey, and if that was not to your fancy either, then you could get the “Woman’s (Coffee Cup on the front cover) Devotional Bible” or the (Manly covered) “Every Man’s Bible.” Then of course there was the “Sportsman’s Bible” for all you “sports lovers” out there and if that still was not to your liking, then you could pick the “Guys Life Application Study Bible” to better suit your desires. This may sound like a bad joke, but I am not kidding, all of these Bibles are on their website and actually exist.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

How about if you’re a teen? If you’re a teen then there is the “Teen Life Application Study Bible.” And kids don’t worry, if the “Action” Bible just didn’t cut it for you, we’ve got you covered with the “Adventure” Bible instead. We’ve got a “Jesus” for everybody. Whether you’re a man, woman, kid, Adventurer or prefer a bouquet of tulips on the front cover, there is a “Jesus” waiting for you exactly how you would prefer him to be, specifically for you! How sick!

The true Christ in the Bible did not suit Himself to be as we would like Him to be. He was as He IS. And as He is, so are we in this world (I John 4:17). He is as the Bible describes Him: The Alpha, the Omega, the Beginning and the End (Revelation 1:8). The Bright and Morning Star, the Prince of Peace, the Lion of the Tribe of Judah and the Man of WAR (For more see Isaiah 9: 6-7).

Jesus was not a pansy proclaiming some “cheesy” version of a false fluffy “love” and “peace” that does not exist except in the mind of (in truth) worldly “professed Christians” who are not true Christians at all. These “professed” believers are looking for their own style of “Jesus.” For the most part, the “Professed Christian Church” has the God of the Bible all wrong because they fail to read the Bible (in its context) for who Jesus is and what He really commanded.

The typical “church goer” goes to church every Sunday, hears a warm and cozy message about a false “love, peace & joy.” This comes from a pastor, who is really a hireling, who fails to mention that the God of the Bible demands holiness (Hebrews 12:14), obedience, perseverance, courage, strength, faith in Christ, and your own sense of nothingness and unworthiness within yourself.

I’ll bet the Lord is just sick and tired of people misrepresenting Him on a daily basis. Pretty much everyone, when you ask them, says they’re a “Christian.” However, the truth is that they don’t have the slightest inkling of who Christ truly is.

Well, “My pastor says that Christ is soft and gently like a lamb who loves me no matter what I do and that all who just try their best go to heaven.” Well, just because your pastor says it, doesn’t’ mean that it’s true.

Did your pastor also mention that the Lord is a Man of War, who will by no means acquit the wicked (Nahum 1:3)? Did he tell you that God is angry with the wicked everyday (Psalms 7:11)? Did he tell you that nowhere in the Bible did Christ ever tell his disciples that He “loved” them? No, Christ demonstrated His love for them and us by His actions (I John 3:18) when He died on the cross for sin! And when Jesus asked Peter in John 21:17 if he loved Him and Peter said, “Lord, You know everything! You know that I love You,” Jesus then told him to “Feed My sheep.” The Lord was asking Peter to demonstrate his love for Him by Peter obeying His commands (John 14:15).

For the most part, the American church has got it all wrong. They have created a “Jesus” that suits everybody. They have formed a god to suit everyone’s own sin and broken the Second Commandment in the process that says, “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image” (Exodus 20). That means, do not create a God to suit your sin.

Well you say, “I like my own version of Christianity.” Yes, well that is exactly what it is… your own and not Christ’s. “The Jesus that I believe in (Or rather that I have created in my mind) suits me.” I bet he does because he is your own homemade “Jesus” that suits your lawless lifestyle and does not exist.

Do not profess Christ to be any other way than how He is in the Bible. Do not take some pastor’s word for who Christ is – read the Bible for yourself. Wouldn’t that be the right thing to do if you really wanted to get the facts straight from the source? I am sick and tired of people misrepresenting the Christ of the Bible and I’m sure Jesus is too.

So, the next time you or someone you know tries to fashion an idol image of Jesus in your mind that does not exist, remember this, There ain’t no such thing as a homemade “Jesus.” If you cling to your own version of Christ, you will be sadly mistaken on Judgment Day!
