Second Rate Christianity

Every once in a great while we’ll stop at a Christian bookstore. While there, I’ll check and see if there are any good, clean, wholesome movies.  These are the kind of films that you know will not have any bad scenes in them, swearing, or things you need to worry about in its content. Our family also prefers that they be based on “true” stories.  However, the problem is that most every time we get a Christian film, it’s cheesy, second rate and usually has bad acting.

Recently, we watched a “Christian” movie that was based on a well-known parable in the Bible.  While this show had some good things and some not so good things about it, it got me thinking about the quality of “Christian” movies and materials compared to the quality of “worldly” movies and materials. Let me explain.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

I am a firm believer of Christians leading the way, as we should be in every aspect of life (Media, Education, Creativity, Business etc.). However, when it comes to things such as movies, music and other outlets, the “Christians” are sorely lacking in every channel I can think of.  Furthermore, rather than “Christians” setting the standard and having the world copy us, the professed “Christians” are copying the world and not leading the way at all.

For example, the world gives us “Batman” and professed Christians fall right along and give us “Bibleman.”  The world gives us the phrase “Got Milk? And the professed Christians once again follow right along in suit and say, “Got Jesus?”  The world gives us “Netflix” and the Christians give us “Pure Flicks.” While I am certainly not against wholesome content in any form of media, it is absolutely a reproach the way the “professed” Christians copy the world. We are to follow Christ (1 Corinthians 11:1) and if we are truly followers of Jesus and true Christians (not “professed” ones), the world would follow us. The world is supposed to be copying us, not the other way around.

Professed Christians tell the world that they need to change and follow Christ. Why? So they can look just like you who are an exact imitation of what they are? There is no difference. It’s like putting a new coat of paint on the same old building, as John Bunyan rightfully said, rather than be becoming a new building altogether (or new creature) in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). Why should a non-Christian be like you? Do you go to the same movies? Dress the same? Listen to the same music? Go to the same concerts? Watch the same TV shows? What makes you different? If you’re answer is pretty much nothing…something is terribly wrong.

We, as true followers of Christ are supposed to “…come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty” (2 Corinthians 6:17-18). Amen! We are to be separate from the world, not hand and glove with it, and certainly not following it!

Catherine Booth said it like this, “When the Church and the world can jog along together comfortably, you may be sure there is something wrong. The world has not altered. Its spirit is exactly the same as it ever was, and if Christians were equally faithful and devoted to the Lord, and separated from the world, living so that their lives were a reproof to all ungodliness, the world would hate them as much as it ever did. It is the Church that has altered, not the world.”

We are not to alter ourselves to the world, but to Christ. We, as Christians, should have the best movies, music, and materials of whatever avenue or channel the Lord has called you to influence. Whatever be the case, you should be setting the standard, not following it. We serve the Creator of all things and that should reflect every area of our lives. True Christians should have the highest standard, the most creative material, and the world should be in awe of what we do because we are representatives of Christ and what we produce is the best, not the worst.
