5 Smooth Stones – Giant Number 4

In last week’s article, we explored why David ‘hand-picked’ 5 smooth stones out of a stream or brook (1 Sam 17:40). This single Scripture is packed with great information! Ever notice that Bible sentences seem to ‘sound funny’? In our day and age, people text, abbreviate and create another form of language; and we lose the beauty of speech, language and communication. Ironic, that we are in the Age of Information and fewer seem to be informed, the Age of Communication and we communicate less and less. No wonder the Son of Man cried out for those who have ears to hear, let him hear! But I digress…

Read this, and read it slowly, pause, Selah and reflect…

“And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.”

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Who writes like this? Hemmingway? Kerouac? Faulkner? The Creator of the Universe does!

Why 5? Why smooth stones? Why hand-picked? Why out of a stream?

Why does the verse tell us all this other information? He had a staff, he had a shepherd’s bag, even in a ‘scrip,’ and a sling in his hand and then drew near t the Philistine?

“Gee Rick, I don’t know, tell us why?”

I don’t have all the answers, but I can assure you there’s a wealth of information in here for all of us, that we probably never took the time to dig and digest. Proverbs 25:2 come to mind,

It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.

God’s Word provides hidden treasures in plain sight!

Last week, we focused on 3 of the 5 giants and how we may have them in our lives. Religion has pretty much taught us that there was only 1, Goliath. Yet, you now know the names of 2 more, from last week’s article: Ishbi-Ben-Ob (2 Sam. 21:6) and Saph (2 Sam. 21:8)

Let’s look at the fourth giant that we find in God’s Word and ponder why the Creator wants us to know about them.

We meet giant #4 in 1 Chronicles 20:5, his name is ‘Lahmi.’ Ever hear of him? I bet you (and I) may know him better than we realize. He’s Goliath’s brother. His name means to be ‘full of food.’ The Hebrew word, you know the language your Bible was originally spoken and written in, is ‘Lachimy’, with the root word being ‘Lechem,’ meaning bread. Is it possible that this giant of the flesh is full of the wrong bread? Not The Bread of Life, but more like the bread of pigs, i.e. The Prodigal Son, who found himself in the husks of the pig-pen and he was hungry, yet didn’t eat that unclean food (Luke 15:16)?

Let’s be honest, we all (myself included) are under the influence of this giant. We all like to feed the flesh rather than the Spirit. “Would you like Fries with that? For only a dollar more we can Super-size that for you?” They might as well say, would you like to “Lahmi” your order?

Perhaps this is what Paul had in mind when he was trying to instruct the believers in Philippi about not “serving the stomach gods.”

For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the stake of the Messiah: Whose end is destruction, whose god is their stomach, and whose dignity is in their shame, who mind earthly things. For our citizenship is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Savior, the Master Yahshua the Messiah (Php 3:18-20).

Notice who kills this giant: Go read the verse again!

And there was war again with the Philistines; and Elhanan the son of Yahir slew Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, whose spear staff was like a weaver’s beam. (1Ch 20:5)

Ever hear of Elhanan? I know you have, but perhaps you didn’t understand it when you did. His name means, “God has been gracious.” We have been taught that we are saved by grace. Grace, Grace, Grace…. It’s all about grace! Yeah, ask anyone, what is that grace you were saved by, and I guarantee you they will say, “unmerited favor.” Proving, once again, if we are taught wrong, we teach wrong!

Pleading grace the next time you get a parking ticket or speeding ticket won’t work with the Judge. Ask him for some grace and see what he says. Unmerited favor is mercy!

What does God’s Word say grace is? (By the way, you are saved by grace through faith…… (Ephesians 2:8). This should beg the question of what faith is, but that’s for another article or study of your own.)

Paul understood what grace was in light of this giant Lahmi! Nancy Reagan knew what grace was, when she came up with a cute slogan to combat the war on drugs, ‘Just say No!’

‘For the grace of God that brings salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying unrighteousness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and reverently in this present world;’ (Titus 2:11-12)

It’s Grace (El Chanan), who helps us slay the giant of ‘worldly lusts’ and the desire to live unrighteously and dare I say, ungodly in this present age! Alcohol, drugs, porn are just the tip of the “fleshburg.” Underneath the flesh, that which we see, is the soul and then the sprit. The soul of “mind-will-emotions,” which is the battle ground where we fight out what we believe.

May we all invoke the El of Channan to slay this giant in our life, including me!

Giant # 5 coming next week…. If you find it, e-mail me Rick@GodleyWorks.com

There is way more to all of this than what I profess to know. However, the exciting part is that Our Father is revealing Himself to each of us in our own measure as we are able to receive it. Please share. Bless you all with the Prince of Peace in the coming days. Saar Shalom.
