Actor Facing 10-Year Prison Sentence for Using Prop Pellet Gun on Movie Set in NJ

Actor and comedian Carlo Goias, who uses the stage name Carlo Bellario, is facing hard time in prison after being arrested and charged with felony possession of a firearm. If found guilty Goias will be facing a ten-year prison sentence because of a prior record… the only problem? The gun was a toy and Goias was filming a movie.

It all started when Goias was playing the body guard of a drug dealer in an unfinished film for a low-budget film company. In the scene, Goias pretended to shoot his gun out of the window of a car that is involved in a car chase in a residential neighborhood. Apparently, several neighbors were unaware that the film was shooting in their neighborhood and called to report the event to the police. Later that day the police arrived and arrested Goias for being in possession of an Airsoft gun.

The actor spent four days in prison as his friends and family scraped together the $10K bail needed to have him released.

The District Attorney then offered Goias a plea deal that would have sent him to prison for up to a year, but now he faces a much harsher penalty — up to 10 years in prison, for his supposed “crime.”

“I was shooting a movie — I wasn’t committing a crime intentionally,” Goias recently told The Associated Press. “Robert De Niro doesn’t ask Marty Scorsese is if he has gun permits. We’re actors. That’s for the production company to worry about.”

…

Jef Henninger, Goias’s defense attorney, said his client is innocent based on his intent, which was to act in a movie, not commit a crime.

“Our fight is really with New Jersey’s gun law and the fact that we have person after person getting arrested and worrying about going to prison,” Henninger said. “There has to be a safety valve that prosecutors have, so these cases can be quickly dealt with.”

The AP reports that “some state lawmakers say the case highlights the need for New Jersey to change its gun laws.” The fact that only “some” lawmakers in New Jersey understand this is evidence that the state government has completely lost control of its ability to reason logically.

Goias faces hard time in prison for carrying a child’s toy that shoots a plastic ball while working on a movie! The state of New Jersey has become fascist nanny-state where the citizens are no longer running things. Instead they are subject to the whim of lawmakers and overly-aggressive lawyers.

The Garden State seems ripe for revolution. It’s time for New Jersey to re-embrace the Bill of Rights.
