Alabama Church Builds Gun Range “In the Name of Jesus Christ”

I don’t know the doctrine of this particular Methodist Church, so can’t really endorse the Church as a whole, but I do like the idea that they are willing to help teach their people to use their weapons safely and responsibly while reaching out to others by using a newly constructed gun range.

In Jemison, Alabama, Rocky Mount United Methodist Church decided to take a snake and vermin infested gully behind their church building and build a gun range and use it as a ministry tool.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Pastor Phillip Guin said that the range was first used because several of the elderly women in the church owned guns, but didn’t know how to use them, so they used the range to educate them on gun safety and marksmanship. However, later on, the Church began to see a ministry opportunity for reaching out to the community. The safety training eventually became the Rocky Mount Hunt and Gun Club.

“This is an opportunity for us to reach out in the name of Jesus Christ in a setting that is completely unique. Even odd by some people’s standards. But who’s to say that church can’t happen right here,” Guin said.

I don’t think it odd at all. The Lord Jesus went out among the sinners, prostitutes, tax collectors (Matt. 9:10-13) and the like and sought to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10) among them. He went along the seashore and called fishermen to come and follow Him. He also went into the traditional place of worship, the Temple, and called people out from there too.

Though the club currently is composed of Church members, they have others outside the Church who are seeking to be a part. In fact, they have even garnered the favoritism of Deputy Chief Marc McMinn of the Jemison Police Department, whose police department trains on the range on a regular basis.

Now, if indeed the true gospel that presents the life, work, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 15:1-4) and calling sinners to repent of their sin (Matt. 4:17; 1 Jn. 3:4) is actually being communicated, along with making disciples of all that Jesus taught (Matt. 28:19-20), then I am all for it. I pray that their endeavors will be used of God.
