Conservatives Should be Thanking Those Who Stand against Unconstitutional Cromnibus Bill

It’s that time of year again.

Establishment Republicans have once again turned against their conservative colleague Ted Cruz (R-TX), and this time are upset with his fellow conservative Mike Lee (R-UT). Last year, the problem was Cruz’s role in the government shut down over concerns about the horrible budget plan from Democrats. This year, the problem is Cruz’s role in fighting the horrible omnibus budget bill that the GOP has joined with Democrats to push.

“I think most Republicans think that Christmas came early for Democrats,” (Lindsay) Graham (R-SC) said “I haven’t seen Harry smile this much in years, and I didn’t particularly like it.” His comments came after Democrats set the groundwork on as many as 24 nominations, many which Republicans opposed, before clearing the massive $1.013 trillion spending package, ending the threat of a government shutdown.

Many Republicans blamed Sens. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Mike Lee, R-Utah, for the number of Democratic nominations. Cruz contested that version of events, saying Reid would’ve held the Senate in either way.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

GOP establishment leaders said that Cruz’s push to stop the omnibus on the grounds that it funds illegal government actions, like President Obama’s amnesty, was not the best way to handle that battle.

GOP leader John Cornyn (R-TX) said, “There was nothing unconstitutional about the appropriation bill, and so people like me voted no even though we’re as outraged as any about the president’s executive action. I just think there are other opportunities that’ll be more effective. So, this is a beginning not the end.”

For his part, Cruz plans to hold the leadership to their word.

“Next year we will have the opportunity to take Republican leaders at their word. The leadership in both the House and the Senate have committed that the purpose of this so-called cromnibus is to fund the federal government and then to set up a limited spending restriction on the funding for the Department of Homeland Security…in February of next year to stop the president’s illegal amnesty.”

Conservatives across the Internet are once again standing up for Cruz (and Lee) who seems to be among the very few Republicans actually willing to stand up for conservative ideals. At RedState, Erick Erickson sums up the establishment GOP angst in one concise and true statement…

“In Washington, more and more Republicans and their pundit allies have decided poop sandwiches sure are tasty!”

Former Alaska Governor and GOP Vice Presidential candidate, Sarah Palin was similarly upset with the GOP’s decision to lay down and give Democrats what they wanted.

“America said loud and clear not just ‘no’ but ‘hell no’ to Obama’s failed policies. But really how out-of-touch do these politicians have to be to misunderstand our recent mandate to stop Barack Obama’s fundamental transformation of the greatest nation on earth?”

“I’ll do my part and I call upon every citizen to do their civic duty to save our country. It’s easy; understand RINO season opens soon and don’t hold back,” she said.

“The Republican leadership in the House just flipped American voters the bird by sidelining the new Congress we elected.”

The LA Times agrees that while the GOP establishment is once again upset with Cruz, Party conservatives seem quite happy with the work he is doing.

But among party conservatives, Cruz was cheered as a hero who was standing up to Obama’s plan to defer deportations for up to 5 million immigrants in the U.S. illegally.

“Thank you,” tweeted Erick Erickson, the conservative editor at Redstate.com, who suggested the hardball tactics not only helped the party win the Senate majority in the 2014 midterm election, but would boost the party’s political currency heading into 2016.

Not only was this omnibus spending bill bad for fully funding Obama’s amnesty and Obamacare, but it was also bad for some of the reasons liberals like Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) said too. (Don’t hate me – this is the only time I can remember agreeing with these two women…)

Dustin Siggins at HotAir writes:

It’s infuriating. In its first significant legislative effort since winning the Senate in a landslide last month, the Beltway’s GOP leadership has chosen to secure a special campaign-finance reform loophole for the election arms of both parties. Furthermore, it worked with the Democratic establishment to put taxpayers on the hook for risky investments by bankers.

And we haven’t even gotten to the fact that the bill offers only a few small improvements to the federal budget while still spending far too much. Likewise, the few mediocre — at best — pro-life efforts are offset by Republican support for slightly expanding the federal funding of abortion and continued funding for population control efforts.

There are a lot of reasons to dislike this omnibus spending bill, yet the GOP acts as if they just had to go along with Reid and Obama and pass this bill. It’s just not true. The GOP establishment hates conservatives almost as much as Democrats do… and their actions prove that claim. We can’t trust the GOP leadership and it’s time we started to realize that fact.
