America today is choking to death on lawlessness. Don’t despair! Not just yet, anyway.
There is a small breeze of American Constitutional and moral sanity blowing out of a little town in Maine. The town is called Sedgewick and the people of the town are sensible and civically literate.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
In a recent town hall meeting, they did something simple and courageous to protect themselves from the tyranny of Washington, DC.
Recognizing the unconstitutionality as well as the disastrous economic effects of Obama’s new “Food Safety” legislation, the residents of this small town voted to enact something called “The Ordinance to Protect the Health and Integrity of the Local Food System.”
This four-page document invokes the town’s right to self-governance and allows local producers and processors to sell food to customers without licensing. The Ordinance itself says this “We have faith in our citizens’ ability to educate themselves and make informed decisions…and we hold that federal and state regulations…constitute a usurpation of our citizens’ right to foods of their choice.”
It doesn’t stop there. Now, three other towns in Hancock County, Maine are poised to adopt “food sovereignty” legislation.
What do they cite as authority for this resistance to the federal monster? Well, quite simply, the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution, which says this: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
And since the Constitution grants the Federal Government NO authority to regulate the preparation or the distribution of food, this authority is reserved to the people. And the people of Maine are speaking up and standing up to take back their God-given right to self-determination.
We can only hope that these breezes of sanity and morality could blow all the way to Annapolis where our legislators are so ignorant of their job and so jaded by their own false sense of self-esteem, that they blasphemously think they can redefine marriage.
May God bless the people of Sedgewick, Maine, and may God preserve them in their fight for liberty.
