Aren’t you weary of the constant barrage of bad news that comes our way every day from every direction? How much more news of injustice, tyranny, perversion, violence, tragedy and impending economic disasters can we take? While it is wise to be informed as accurately as possible regarding local, national and world events, it is easy to become discouraged and overwhelmed by it all.
Evil is running rampant today in unprecedented ways, virtually unchecked, exactly as the Bible said it would.
“But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived (II Timothy 3:13).”
Bad news proliferates because as human beings, originally created in the likeness and image of God, we have knowingly and unknowingly given ourselves over to the lying influences of Satan, the source of all evil. The bad news is we are sinful and lost.
The gospel of Jesus Christ is good news. Jesus said, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent and believe the gospel (Mark 1:15).” His message was and still is a command for us to change our minds and our direction. Stop disagreeing with God and start agreeing with Him. We can experience a new beginning, a whole new life, not without difficulties, but free from the horrible bondages of fear, anger, lust, depression, addictions, religious performances and vain imaginations of all kinds.
Jesus said, “…believe the gospel.” Today there are a great many perversions of the good news.
“I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ (Galatians 1:6-7).”
There is only one gospel, only one message of good news that is life-giving and life transforming. God’s only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, has paid in full the penalty due for your sin and mine. He has conquered the grave and all the powers of hell. Thanks to Him the new heaven and the new earth can be our future dwelling place, not the lake of fire.
This good news is for people of all ages, nations and cultures (Luke 2:10-11).
The good news is that no matter what a person has done, gone through or is going through, if they will turn from their sin to put their full trust in the one and only Savior, Jesus Christ, they will receive His marvelous mercy and amazing grace. Complete forgiveness, right standing with God and joy will be theirs. Even the most wounded hearts can be healed, the most darkened minds enlightened, the most blatant sinners transformed. God gives us the free gift of eternal life, life more abundantly, and actually inscribes his laws deep in our hearts (Romans 5:15-18; John 10:10; Jeremiah 31:33).
This good news flies squarely in the ugly faces every form of bad news and gives genuine hope, the sure expectation that God will faithfully keep His Word now and forever. For those who have surrendered to Christ, this present world of bad news will eventually be not even a fading memory. Those who have by faith received and are living to proclaim the good news, will one day find their home in the new heaven and the new earth where righteousness dwells (II Peter 3:13).
In the meantime, the greatest thing we can do to bring about positive change to people in this fallen world is to wholeheartedly believe, faithfully declare and powerfully demonstrate the gospel, which is summed up in Jesus Christ Himself.
The old line popularized in the turbulent days of the 1960s still holds true: “If you are not
part of the solution, you are part of the problem.”
America desperately needs powerful, Holy Spirit-filled men and women, boys and girls, who are so passionately in love with Jesus they will do anything He commands to reach those He died to save.
A gospel minster from East Africa recently said, “When the church is silent, the devil talks a lot.” The daily floods of bad news are the testimonies of Satan’s activities. He is determined to squelch the good news. We can’t let him do that any longer!
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth…. (Romans 1:16).
Are you busy feeding on the bad news or the good news? Are you preoccupied with rehearsing Satan’s work or God’s? Maybe it’s time for you to repent of your sin and put your trust in the only One who can save you.
Shining through the gloom of the increasingly bad news is God’s good news. Someone said, “The gospel is good news only if it
arrives in time.” It’s high time we share it–faithfully, powerfully lovingly–with everyone we can while we still can. Don’t wait until it’s too late for you and for them!
