GOP Cowardly Backs Away from Pro-Life Bill

This week the Republican Party had a historic opportunity to save thousands – perhaps even millions of lives… and as is their wont, they blew it. It’s moments like these that sicken me as a conservative. I’ve generally supported the Republican Party over the years because their candidates best fit my general political disposition. But on days like these, I really get heartsick when I think that this is the party that I’ve supported over the years.

This past Sunday was Sanctity of Life Sunday around the country. On Thursday the March for Life took place in Washington, D.C. Hundreds of thousands of pro-life supporters gathered in our nation’s capital to demand that we protect the most innocent lives among us.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Thursday was also supposed to be the day that Congress would pass the most important anti-abortion legislation since Roe v. Wade effectively “legalized” child murder. Instead, it’s just another footnote in the history of GOP cowardice.

On Thursday, the GOP was supposed to pass the “Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act,” which would have outlawed abortion after 20 weeks. The bill would have assuredly passed both chambers of Congress and been placed upon the desk of President Obama – forcing the President to show just how extreme his views really are. But fortunately for Obama, he’ll never have to make that pro-death stand.

See, a coalition of weak-kneed and spineless Republicans rose up to stop the bill and ensure the murder of many more babies in the years to come.

Rene Ellmers (R-NC) and Jacki Walorski (R-IN) led a group of GOP politicians who effectively stopped the legislation from moving forward. Rep. Ellmers “had recently asked leaders to reconsider holding the vote, noting that Republicans had faced harsh criticism from Democrats in recent years for mounting a “war on women” by passing restrictive abortion legislation and other similar bills.

“The first vote we take, or the second vote, or the fifth vote, shouldn’t be on an issue where we know that millennials—social issues just aren’t as important [to them],” she said in an interview with National Journal.”

The GOP leadership called a leadership meeting with many Congresswomen from their Party, and the end result was the decision to put off the “Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act,” and instead pass another bill that is a rehash of a law that has already existed for years. The new bill simply says that the federal government cannot provide funding for abortion — an agreement that has already existed in various forms since it first passed as the Hyde Amendment in 1976.

Conservative response to Ellmers has been negative. So the Congresswoman took to Facebook to defend her pro-life bonafides. Here’s what she said…

To clear up any misinformation, I will be voting tomorrow to support H.R. 36 – The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protect Act Resources bill. I have and will continue to be a strong defender of the prolife community.

The only problem with this is… she’ll never have to vote for it. Because she led a group of GOP Congresswomen to stand against it and now the GOP leadership won’t bring it up for a vote.

RedState’s Erick Erickson speaks the truth on Renee Ellmers…

Congresswoman Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) worked tireless to scuttle the legislation then had the temerity to claim she actually would vote for if only it would come to the floor.

Ellmers, according to multiple sources, persuaded a number of women in the House Republican Conference to walk away from the bill to ensure it could not pass. Then she declared she’d vote for it once she was sure it could not pass.

It was a two-faced ploy that worked.

On the other side of the debate, Congressman Trent Franks (R-AZ), who was a co-sponsor of the bill and has been an ardent pro-life activist for years, sounded heartbroken upon realizing the GOP wouldn’t advance his bill.

“I’ve maintained an open heart, because I realize that all of the people involved have sincere perspectives and have knowledge and experiences and information that I don’t have. So my heart is open – my desire here is not a political victory, it is to try to somehow be part of catalyzing an awakening in America to where we finally see the humanity of these little victims and the inhumanity of what’s happening to them.”

Please. If you are a reader living in Renee Ellmers’ district in North Carolina, consider supporting a different GOP candidate the next time she comes up for election. We have made the mistake of offering praise for Ms. Ellmers in the past, but here recent defections on illegal immigration and now abortion have shown us that we were wrong to praise her when we did.

Republicans like Ellmers are more insidious than the Democrats we oppose because they pretend to be on our side. It’s time to send Ellmers back to North Carolina – she’s become a stumbling block in Washington.

By the way, you can call Rep. Ellmers at (202) 225-4531, though her staff has been hanging up on pro-lifers who call. You might also want to send her this addressed to Rep. Renee Ellmers, 406 West Broad Street, Dunn, NC 28334.
