Is The Obama Administration Foreign Policy Giving Syria To ISIS?

President Barack Obama making some new statements about ISIS that are leaving some people scratching their heads, even as a Georgia lawmaker wants Congress to stand up against the attempted overthrow of Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad.

This is Reality Check you won’t see anywhere else.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Speaking in Malaysia, President Obama says the United States will not relent in the fight against terror, will not come to accept extremist attacks as the new normal. And then he said this about ISIS:

“They’re a bunch of killers with good social media.”

Keep in mind, President Obama has already been hammered for one year ago calling ISIS a JV team.

But while our president seems to continue to ignore the fact that ISIS is heavily armed and extremely well-funded, and the fact that ISIS still controls large portions of Iraq and Syria, where they are committing tens of thousands of atrocities, he does continue to talk about the need to overthrow Assad.

“We must recognize that after so much bloodshed and so much carnage there cannot be a return to the pre-war status quo,” he said. “…realism dictates that compromise will be required to end the fighting and stamp out ISIL but realism also requires managed transition away from Assad and to a new leader.”

As I’ve been telling you, it was the Obama administration’s attempt alongside the Saudis, Jordan, Qatar and Israel to fund Syrian rebels in the first place to overthrow Assad that led to the rise of ISIS. It was something we have shown you in recent Reality Checks.

Now, two members of Congress are now echoing that sentiment with a bill just filed.

Georgia Rep. Austin Scott, a Republican, and Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, a Democrat, both of whom are members of the House Armed Services Committee, have filed a bipartisan bill to “End U.S. efforts to overthrow the Syrian Arab Republic led by President Bashar al Assad.”

Representative Scott released this statement saying, “Our primary mission should be the war against ISIS, al Qaeda and radical Islamic extremists that have operations both inside and outside of Syria and Iraq.”

The statement from Representative Gabbard continues: “The war to overthrow Assad is counterproductive because it actually helps ISIS and other Islamic extremists achieve their goal of overthrowing the Syrian government of Assad and taking control of all of Syria, which will simply increase human suffering in the region, exacerbate the refugee crisis and pose a greater threat to the world.”

So what you need to know is that what these members of Congress are finally calling out is something that should have been known three years ago.

In fact, as I showed in that leaked DOD document last week, the Obama administration knew that by funding rebels and trying to overthrow Assad they would likely give Syria to Islamic fundamentalists.

Now that we know too well what that looks like, shouldn’t there be accountability?
