Is the Senate’s Obamacare Repeal Bill Smoke and Mirrors for Voters?

It is hard to tell anymore. When we see our political system at work, what is real and what is gamesmanship? What is meant to pass and what is set up for the benefit of public opinion? If they try and fail, can we blame them? These are the questions that we face with the Senate’s passage of the “Repeal Bill.”

Breitbart reports:

The U.S. Senate approved a bill Thursday that would Obamacare of key tax-raising features and would also eliminate taxpayer-funding of abortion businesses, including Planned Parenthood.

The 52 to 47 vote also would strip taxpayer funding from Planned Parenthood for one year. This measures has been pushed by a renewed call to defund the abortion business since the release of videos exposing the organization’s apparent practices of harvesting body parts of unborn babies and altering the position of babies during abortions in order to harvest their intact organs.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

At first glance, this seems to be a great thing. We should be repealing the mammoth, unsustainable, socialist healthcare act that will likely sink private and public citizen alike. We should also stop funding to the murder factory, Planned Parenthood. But, after we get past these emotional reactions, we must face a stark fact: This bill will accomplish neither.

NPR reports:

But first, let’s make it very clear — nothing that happens on the Senate floor this week will ever actually become law, because any bill that repeals the Affordable Care Act and defunds Planned Parenthood is going to get vetoed by the president.

So, some might ask, what is the value of this exercise?

“The value is to let him know — the president — and others that there’s a big division in this country, and a lot of us don’t like it, and the American people don’t like it,” said Republican Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama.

So, what we are looking at is political pandering to the populous. This way these Senators and their House counterparts can point to this bill and say, “Hey look, we voted to do this, as we said we would. But is this all that they are doing?

NPR continues:

In other words, symbolic votes are important. They give senators a chance to go on the record. They provide fodder for campaign ads later. So, to Republicans, even though there’s a pileup of stuff Congress has to get through in the next couple of weeks — like funding the government, passing a highway bill and extending tax breaks — making Obama veto a bill that undermines his health care law and Planned Parenthood is worth their time.

But, before the ultra conservatives and the Leftists jump on this group with both feet, there is something that we must take into account, something that many of us have or will quickly dismiss: Responsibility.

Breitbart reports:

Family Research Council president Tony Perkins commended the U.S. Senate for approving the bill. “This is a huge victory for unborn children, their mothers, and for taxpayers,” Perkins said. “For the first time during the Obama presidency, both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives have approved legislation that begins to end the forced partnership between taxpayers and Planned Parenthood.”

“President Obama will now bear the moral responsibility for sending our tax dollars to a group that has engaged in the selling of baby body parts,” he continued. “Even if the President vetoes the bill, we’ve still succeeded, because a Senate precedent has now been set for moving a similar measure forward when America finally has a President who understands the value of every person, born and unborn.”

This points us to a fact that has long been forgotten in this land. When you stand by and do nothing, then you are as guilty as the criminal. When we stand before our Creator, we will have to answer not only for what we did and said, but also for what did not do and did not say.

The Senate has sought to put the guilt for this theft and murder to the responsible party.  Pass or fail, Obama will bear the burden.
