In an election year that has been nothing short of stunning on many levels, what is about to happen tonight could be one of the most interesting moments. Donald Trump (R) will skip the final GOP debate before Iowa and hold his own event opposite the Fox debate on CNN. Why is this moment much bigger than just Trump?
This is a Reality Check you won’t see anywhere else.
“By walking away from this debate, you are not giving them the opportunity to know you as well as they would like,” stated Bill O’Reilly in a conversation with Trump on the O’Reilly Factor. Trump replied, “I am not walking away, I was pushed away.” O’Reilly went on pleading with Trump, “Would you do me a favor? I bought you so many vanilla milkshakes, so many vanilla milkshakes you owe me.”
That was Fox News host O’Reilly literally begging Trump to reconsider his decision to skip tonight’s Fox News debate. This is the final GOP debate before the Iowa caucus next week. Trump says he is boycotting the debate because of this statement Fox released two days ago:
“We learned from a secret back channel that the Ayatollah and Putin both intend to treat Donald Trump unfairly when they meet with him if he becomes president,” Fox said. “A nefarious source tells us that Trump has his own secret plan to replace the Cabinet with his Twitter followers to see if he should even go to those meetings.”
That statement was reportedly released with the OK of Fox Chief Roger Ailes. The bottom line is that Fox was clowning Trump. Whether you like Trump or not, he has led nearly every single poll since joining the race in July and he is the front runner. The bottom line is that no network has ever mocked a presidential candidate only days before hosting a debate with that candidate.
“Forgive, go forward, answer the questions, look out for the folks. I just want you to consider it,” O’Reilly continued pleading.
However, Trump says he won’t consider it and tonight, opposite the Fox debate, he will host an event in Iowa to raise money for veterans. That fundraiser will be aired on CNN.
So what makes this story so interesting is that Fox, which set an all time cable news record for a debate with the first Republican debate of the season, was also the network that cut out certain candidates, placing them on an undercard debate. A lot of people saw that as Fox attempted to promote certain candidates over others. As for the Republican Party, well they have stayed out of this.
Yesterday the Republican National Committee announced that it will drop NBC as a debate partner next month because it feels the CNBC debate moderators from last October asked questions that were too sensational and not of substance. Then again, CNBC didn’t clown a Republican candidate publicly and it’s a pretty safe bet that the RNC isn’t going to pull Fox’s debate.
So what you need to know is that America’s two party system is so broken. Networks and news agencies push the agenda of one party or the other. The parties and media work together to try to game the outcome. So, if you wonder why Trump and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) are so popular, it’s because so many Americans are done with this current political game.
