Kentucky High School Kicks Anti-Theist Group in the Teeth – Begins Football Season with Pre-Game Prayer

The anti-theist group, Freedom from Religion Foundation, has been kicked in the teeth again. In the state that just jailed County Clerk Kim Davis for not issuing sodomite marriage licenses in violation of the law, Bell County High School football team ignored the whining of the group and began their football season with prayer.

In a statement by the anti-theist group, they claimed, “The Supreme Court specifically struck down student-led invocations given over the loudspeaker at public school football games, because the games are school-sponsored events conducted on school property.”

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

“Scheduling prayer at a school-sponsored event is a flagrant violation of the law,” FFRF attorney Rebecca Markert wrote in a letter to the school district. “Given the clear legal precedent on this issue, it is surprising — not to mention baffling — that the school board would knowingly violate the law and bring back prayer before athletic games.”

Apparently, these people know nothing of the law. Did they not read in the First Amendment that government is not allowed to make any law regarding the “free exercise” of religion (specifically the Christian religion)? That does include any public property, and the Supreme Court can pound sand since there is no law against it.

However, FFRF was successful in bullying the school since 2011 in keeping prayer out, but I think decided to take their school back.

The students and faculty got together and started a petition to reintroduce the tradition of pre-game prayer that they had previously engaged in up until 2011 into the 2015 football season. That petition cited the First Amendment, which protects both speech and the exercise of religion.

“It’s been a long-standing tradition here at Bell County High School that there be prayer at the football games. Then there was obviously someone who was opposed to it,” Bell County High teacher Samantha Johnson told WKYT. “The prayers were simply usually praying over the players and their safety. There was nothing offensive in the prayers.”

While FFRF is unhappy about all of this, they’ll just have to suck it up because no laws are being violated.

The Lexington Herald Leader cited Joe Humfleet, who heads the high school football booster club, as not wanting to see the school “bow to a complaint from a few people about something many people support.”

“We need to go on with what’s right,” Humfleet said. “We’re letting the minority dictate what we do. It’s not right morally, and it’s not right by our American way.”

While Markert claimed the “district has a duty to remain neutral toward religion,” Superintendent Yvonne Gilliam said that she was not going to anticipate the school district doing anything different because of the whiners and complainers at FFRF.

“We’re trying to do everything legally,” she said.

Amen! See? Again, when Christians stand up and will not be bullied by these anti-theists, they bring victory. May God grant grace to many more to do the same.
