If a group were to conspire together with the goal of destroying a country without firing a shot, how would they pull that off? The most effective way to destroy a land is to collapse it at its foundations, and the most fundamental building block of any civilization is the family. As the family goes, so goes everything else. So the most effective pathway is to declare war against marriage and the family in order to completely destroy a society.
The strategy to destroy the American family began with the promotion of fornication, leading to the glorification of adultery; add to that the explosion of marriage destruction by no-fault divorce along with the political fraud of feminism promoted everywhere, and then down the slide to the acceptance of sodomy and now to the redefinition of marriage. Add to that the legal structure which gives the wife nearly unlimited power once a child is born to financially bankrupt her husband, take his current and future property and earnings, and potentially jail him if he bucks at all against the injustice done to him, and you have a recipe for a divorce industry which will succeed in destroying the majority of families and tragically stifle the formation of new families as young men receive a clear message about the high risk and low reward of ever getting engaging at all.
Once all those evils percolate throughout the culture, marriage will no longer be the norm and the destruction will be nearly complete. Consider our situation today. “According to 2014 data from the U.S. Census Bureau, 7.9 million opposite sex couples in the U.S. live together but are not married. A 2014 study by Johns Hopkins University also found that 57 percent of children born to women aged 26 to 31 are out of wedlock….According to ‘projections based on census data, when today’s young adults reach their mid-40s to mid-50s, a record high share (25%) is likely to have never been married,’ Pew Research noted in a 2014 study documenting the decline of marriage in the U.S. [One writer states,] But men are not entirely to blame for the steep decline in marriage… ‘A lot of women fear marriage. While feminism is a spent force, the ultimate consequences of that philosophy is a whole generation of women who don’t want any man to tell them what to do, and don’t really understand the give and take that is necessary for a marriage relationship.'”
One book out last year, Men on Strike, states “that men are acting rationally in response to the lack of incentives society offers them to be responsible fathers, husbands and providers. In addition, men are going on strike, either consciously or unconsciously, because they do not want to be injured by the myriad of laws, attitudes and hostility against them for the crime of happening to be male in the twenty-first century.”
We are living in a time when we can see the wholesale destruction of marriage and family. It is no longer simply a possibility, the reality is right there before us. What can be done? Return to our Creator’s design for marriage, recognize that His Law alone is wise, that His law, when followed, brings unparalleled blessing upon the whole of a society. Turn to Exodus 21, as we continue in our series, True Law is God’s Law.
Marriage Betrothal – Exodus 21:7-11 “And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do. If she please not her master, who hath betrothed her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed: to sell her unto a strange nation he shall have no power, seeing he hath dealt deceitfully with her. And if he have betrothed her unto his son, he shall deal with her after the manner of daughters. If he take him another wife; her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish. And if he do not these three unto her, then shall she go out free without money.”
Here is a passage that, just as last week, raises the hackles of most people in our land today. But before we hastily reject what the Word of God is saying, we need to understand it and see the wisdom that is here for us. The background that helps to understand this, of which I spoke briefly last week, is the Bride price—or what some call the Bride Wealth—along with the dowry. A young woman, as an unmarried virgin, was valued highly—not only in that culture, but by the Law of God. What she would have to offer a potential husband as helpmeet and companion, as wife, and mother of his children was something of the highest value.
