No Surprise: Jeb Bush, Like Obama, Sees Marriage Views “Evolve”

Don’t count me as a fan of Jeb Bush. While I think he is a better candidate for President than John McCain (R-AZ), and perhaps a better fit than Mitt Romney (R-MA)… he just seems to be more of the same from the GOP establishment. And more of the same is not what our nation needs.

His most recent comments on same-sex “marriage” have not done anything to change my negative views of his decision to run for President.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Let me preface this with full disclosure – I am a Christian who believes that homosexuality (the act and the desire) is a sin, and that marriage is not a “political” issue but a moral and religious one. I also believe that marriage is a supernatural covenant between God and a husband and wife. This belief has led me to argue that the state has no place in marriage… and that marriage should be left to citizens and their houses of worship.

So in essence, I believe that the government shouldn’t have anything to say about marriage. Ever.

Sadly, that is not the America we live in. We live in an America where the government and activist judges have decided that they can force religious Americans to bend to the will of our culture’s politically correct persuasions. Our culture is hell bent on forcing Christians to comply with the ever declining state of morality in America, and it is in this sad and disgusting state in which we find our religious freedoms.

It is onto this stage that Jeb Bush steps with his own opinion on same-sex “marriage,” and it is not an opinion that most conservatives are likely to find themselves in agreement.

On same-sex “marriage” Jeb Bush says:

“It ought be a local decision. I mean, a state decision,” the former governor said Sunday in a brief interview. “The state decided. The people of the state decided. But it’s been overturned by the courts, I guess.”

As governor, he was against same-sex marriage but wasn’t publicly enthusiastic about the successful 2008 campaign to rewrite the Florida Constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman. Bush, who left office in 2007, said the change wasn’t needed, since state law already restricted marriage to heterosexual couples. Two years ago, he suggested in a PBS interview that gay parents could be held up as role models, even as he said “traditional marriage is what should be sanctioned” by the government.

In the 2012 interview, Bush told Charlie Rose that “if people love their children with all their heart and soul and that’s what they do and that’s how they organize their life, that should be held up as an example to others, because we need it.” In a speech to a Republican group last year, Bush warned against being a party seen as against too many things, including being “anti-gay.”

Then in a piece for the New York Times, Bush wanders even further from conservative orthodoxy.

“We live in a democracy, and regardless of our disagreements, we have to respect the rule of law,” Mr. Bush said in a statement. “I hope that we can show respect for the good people on all sides of the gay and lesbian marriage issue – including couples making lifetime commitments to each other who are seeking greater legal protections and those of us who believe marriage is a sacrament and want to safeguard religious liberty.”

Homosexual rights leaders are applauding Bush’s new stance.

Mr. Bush “at least is expressing his respect for those who support marriage equality,” Mr. Sainz said. “That’s a big change for Republicans.”

So Bush’s views on same-sex “marriage” have “evolved” and become more liberal over the last few years. Can we really trust a man whose mind has so conformed on such a crucial issue? I’m not even certain I can believe his “it should be up to the states” bit… it seems like a simple cop-out, doesn’t it? Bush knows that “leaving it up to the states” has simply resulted in the spread of same-sex “marriage” at an ever hurried pace.

I’m just not sure this is an issue that Bush cares enough about to even form a real opinion, and that is of grave concern to me. In fact, Jeb Bush’s answers on our most pressing issues all seem to be couched in whatever the popular political-speak of the day is.

Couple his views on same-sex “marriage” with his absolute love for the Common Core, his full-throated support of amnesty, and his apparent acceptance of tax increases and Bush’s candidacy is all-but-dead to me.
