Prayer in the Air & Boots on the Ground in Kentucky – God Gives the Victory!

As I mentioned last week, I have spent the past 6 days on the ground in Grayson, Kentucky. Grayson is the town in which Christian heroine Kim Davis was jailed.

The question I asked last week was, “What Difference Does it Make?” in regard to standing with Kim Davis.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Permit me to give you a rundown of what we did.

On Thursday, we drove to Ashland, Kentucky, where Kim, a Democrat, had been ordered to appear before Republican, Bush II appointed, Federal Judge David Bunning. Judge Bunning decreed that Mrs. Davis was in contempt of Court and ordered her jailed until, like Cool Hand Luke, she got her mind right and bowed to his un-Constitutional edict.

She was charged with no crime, jailed without bail, and granted no opportunity to appeal. Judge Bunning scheduled a hearing for a week later to see if she had bowed to the Golden Calf.

We immediately sprang into action. Our little band of Christians scheduled a “Prayer Rally” for Kim at 11 am Saturday outside the jail in Grayson. We hit the intersections with banners and flyers and attended Friday night high school football games disseminating nearly 5,000 fliers inviting the community to “Stand With Kim.” Nearly 1,000 people showed up!

Understanding that it was a holiday weekend, we knew that it was imperative that we keep the story alive until people returned to their normal schedule once the weekend was over. Thirty of us made the 120 mile trek to Fort Thomas, Kentucky to the home of Judge Bunning where we spent Monday afternoon praying, singing, and leafleting his neighborhood in an effort to expose his unjust ruling and holiday weekend incarceration of a Christian woman who was merely living out her faith. Our message was clear to everyone we spoke with including the many interviews that we provided for the media. Because it was a slow news day, most of the TV stations stayed with us all afternoon as we made a very simple point. SHOW US THE LAW KIM ALLEGEDLY BROKE OR SET HER FREE!

Courts don’t make laws. That is the civics lesson that Kim Davis was providing for the entire country. We made it clear that the battle wasn’t over “religious liberty” or “freedom of conscience,” but rather over the Constitutional fact that courts don’t make laws.

By the time Mike Huckabee came to town for a “Stand with Kim Rally” the narrative had been set, not by the media, but by the echoing refrain of “SHOW US THE LAW.” Re-education is a slow process, but we gained a lot of ground with the nearly 10,000 who showed up at the Huckabee event.

On Tuesday, after a five day intense battle to FREE KIM DAVIS, our efforts produced fruit. A crowd of nearly 10,000 fed-up Christians cheered as we watched this fearless woman of God emerge from the confines of her wrongful captivity. It was one of the most electric moments of my life. Rarely does God so rapidly answer prayers, but I truly believe that God wanted to “amen” the actions of his children and encourage them to press on to a higher calling in Christ.

You see, God answers prayer, but He answers prayer most often through the work of His children. He told us that if we had faith as small as a mustard seed that we would be able to move mountains. Notice that He didn’t say that HE would move mountains but that we, with Him working through us, would move them ourselves. Sometimes moving a mountain requires that we grab a shovel and throw some dirt.

God moves mountains through us. Faith, without works, is dead. Sometimes faith is exercised through a shovel.

There are many who will claim responsibility for Kim Davis’ release, and I’m sure that there are many who played a role in this battle, but the fact remains that Kim is free today because Christians got out of their churches and put their boots on the ground. Prayer matters for sure, but prayers alone did not secure her release. Kim Davis is home with her family today because Christians finally came out of their stained-glass fortresses and said, “WE’VE HAD ENOUGH!”

I closed last week’s commentary this way.

What difference does it make? I sometimes ask myself the same question. I wonder how the guys in Benghazi would answer that question. Call me nuts, but duty calls so I am on the road again.

I’ll ask Kim Davis if my coming was worth it. I’ll let you know what she says.”

I didn’t get a chance to talk to Kim, but I did speak with her husband, Joe. He wants you to know that he and Kim are grateful for our actions. Because thousands of us cared enough to show up, Kim and Joe slept in the same bed Tuesday night.

I used to encourage our teams back in my coaching days by often reminding them that the most important part of the battle is simply showing up.

Prayer alone is not enough. In the Garden Jesus prayed until blood came out of his pores. We should be glad today that Jesus did more than pray. He got off His knees and He walked out His faith all the way to the cross of Calvary. “God so loved the world that He DID something.”

As my friend Pastor Wiley Drake so often says, “Prayer in the air and boots on the ground.” That is the formula for victory! God honors action.
