In 1967, the South African surgeon Dr. Christian Barnard performed the first ever successful human-to-human heart transplant. The patient was Louis Washkansky, formerly a very active, athletic man whose heart muscle had severely deteriorated. His only medical hope of continuing to live was a then highly experimental heart transplant.
Not long after the pioneer surgical procedure, Dr. Barnard brought Mr. Washkansky’s old heart in a glass container to his hospital room for him to see. Never before had a human being seen his own heart. The man stared at the seriously defective and now lifeless organ for a few moments, turned to the others in the room and reportedly said, “I’m sure glad I don’t have that old heart anymore.”
Many are devoted to getting us back to following the Constitution and electing truly conservative judges and legislators. Others are calling for the dismantling of Homeland Security, instituting laws that will put a stop to abortion on demand, and/or impeaching Obama. Drastically reforming our court system, the public education system and church methodologies are also hot topics of debate. Some are crusading to improving parenting skills, seen as the key factor in diminishing the growing multitude of evils that haunt us every day.
All these are worthy causes. But what would have to happen in order for these fundamental changes for the better to be accomplished?
The very heart of our nation is severely defective and damaged. Some say way beyond repair. Too many of us however are intensely occupied with trying to remove the fruit of evil without doing our part to remove its root.
Where and what is the root?
“Thy way and thy doings have procured these things unto thee; this is thy wickedness because it is bitter, because it reacheth unto thy heart.” Jeremiah 4:18
Jesus said, “That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. For from within, out of the heart of men proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: all these evil things come from within and defile the man.” Mark 7:20-23
Change in America, or in any other nation or any person’s life, has to come from the inside out. The change we need must take place deep within our hearts. Only through prayerfully declaring and demonstrating the true gospel of Christ (Romans 1:16) repenting of our sin, receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and yielding to him as Lord can the opportunity be provided for Him to destroy the devil’s power within us so we can be free to live a brand new life! This is the cause which needs to be the primary focus of our efforts.
The essence of God’s New Covenant is:
“…I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.” Jeremiah 31:33b
“And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh and will give them an heart of flesh.” Ezekiel 11:19
We can’t save ourselves through our character, culture, education, politics, legislation, philanthropy or religion. Our only lasting hope is not in seeking to improve ourselves and in tirelessly attempting to reform a satanic world system, but in receiving the miraculous transplant of the nature of Jesus Christ deep within us. Letting Him replace our old heart and give us a new one is the change we all so desperately need.
