Senator Rand Paul on Airstrikes in Syria: “The United States was not Attacked”

On Thursday evening, following the launch of more than 50 Tomahawk cruise missiles on a Syrian air base, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) said that the united States was not attacked, and called on President Donald Trump to follow the Constitution and come before Congress for a declaration of war.

“While we all condemn the atrocities in Syria, the United States was not attacked,” Paul said.  ” The President needs congressional authorization for military action as required by the Constitution, and I call on him to come to Congress for a proper debate.”

“Our prior interventions in this region have done nothing to make us safer and Syria will be no different,” he added.

When Senator Paul was asked, “Do you think we should do what Senator McCain said and make this thing a no fly zone? And if they try to fly, bomb out their runways?”

Paul answered very similar to Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) earlier in the week.

“The first thing we ought to do is probably obey the constitution.” he said.  “When Nikki Haley came before my committee and I voted for her, I asked her that question. ‘Will you try to take us to war. Will you advocate for war without constitutional or congressional authority?’ And she said no. So I assumed what she means by this is that the president, if he decides to do something in Syria he would come to congress and ask for a declaration of war. Short of congress voting on it, I’m opposed to illegal and unconstitutional wars.”

“Short of congress voting on it, I’m opposed to illegal and unconstitutional wars,” he said.

“I have the greatest amount of sympathy, I can’t see those pictures, it’s heartrending to see those pictures,” he said. “But going to war we have to decide will it be better or worse? Will we improve our national security? Are we threatened currently by Syria, and if we go to war is Assad likely to use less chemical weapons or more?”

Paul argued American attacks could make the situation in Syria worse.

“There’s some argument for the more cornered and the more defeated in some ways more likely they are to use chemical weapons and actually for the less defeated they are that they’re less likely to use them,” he said. “The bottom line is it’s horrific.”

Paul is right on this one.  This mess we create in the Middle East of going in and toppling dictators in the region only results in Islamic jihadis taking over.  Walid Shoebat pointed this out in his column today and it’s spot on with references to decades old plans to go to war with several Middle East countries, including Syria.

The Constitution is clear about who declares war and yes, firing over 50 missiles at another country that is no threat to us is an act of war.  However, it seems that we are seeing nothing short of what Barack Hussein Obama Soetoro Sobarkah did during his time with drones strikes in Yemen (which Trump has continued as well without any authorization) and Syria (which Trump has now done with missiles).
