The driver of an SUV was shot on Wednesday morning following a vehicle ramming the main gate of the National Security Agency in Ft. Meade, Maryland.

Three men in a black Ford Escape, which is believed to have been a rental, with New York plates plowed into a gate about 6:55 am on Wednesday before coming to a stop at a concrete barrier with “NSA” labeled on it.  The driver was shot.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Maryland 32 was blocked off following the incident.

The Baltimore Sun reports:

The driver and two passengers in the black SUV were taken into custody after the incident shortly before 7 a.m. at Gate 1 on Canine Road off Maryland Route 32. A spokesman for the FBI’s Baltimore field office said late Wednesday that investigators are examining the possibility that the driver might have made a wrong turn into the complex, but it is not the only theory they are considering.

Injured were an NSA police officer, the driver of the SUV and a civilian bystander, said Gordon B. Johnson, special agent in charge for the FBI’s Baltimore office. He said the SUV had three occupants.

He said shots were fired during the incident, but did not believe any of the injuries were caused by gunfire. He would not say who opened fire, but said it appeared the gunfire was “directed at the vehicle.”

All of the men in the vehicle were in the custody of the NSA and the driver was hospitalized.

“This vehicle did come onto the NSA’s compound unauthorized,” Johnson said. “NSA police responded accordingly.”

“We are trying to talk to them to understand why they were here,” Johnson said.

Johnson also said that the injuries to the officer and civilian onlooker were not considered life-threatening.

This is somewhat similar to an incident that occurred in March 2015.  At that time, two men dressed as women ignored orders to turn around and accelerated towards a police car.  They were shot at as they entered the NSA.

Apparently, these two men in drag had left their friend exhausted at a hotel and had stolen his Ford Escape.  They were believed to have mistakenly taken the restricted NSA exit and then rammed into a gate at the NSA.
