The Department of State designated notorious, radical Islamic preacher Anjem Choudary as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT), along with four others Thursday.
In a press release issued Thursday, the State Department listed foreign persons El Shafee Elsheikh, Anjem Choudary, Sami Bouras, Shane Dominic Crawford and Mark John Taylor as SDGTs for their stringent support of the Islamic State.
The designation, under Section 1(b) of Executive Order 13224, applies sanctions to anyone who either has committed or is at strong risk of committing terrorist acts that threaten U.S. national security in any way.
The sanctions entail that in almost all cases, U.S. persons cannot engage in any dealings with these ISIS supporters. Additionally, any assets these SDGTs held in the U.S. are now completely frozen.
Choudary is by far the most infamous of the men listed and has praised the Sept. 11 attacks and called for the implementation of Sharia law in the United Kingdom, where he is based.
After engaging in aggressive radicalism for more than two decades, Choudary was finally arrested in 2014 under antiterrorism laws for acting as a recruiter for ISIS and pledging his support to the group. He was sentenced in September 2016 to five-and-a-half years, but said explicitly he would continue recruitment while in prison.
According to the judge involved in the sentencing, Choudary, “encouraged [his] audience … to believe that no one who failed to support the caliphate established by Isis could be a true Muslim.”
As Choudary was taken off to jail, his supporters packing the courtroom yelled, “Allahu Akbar.”
El Shafee Elsheikh, a British citizen, left to join al-Qaida in 2012 in Syria and later joined ISIS, where he quickly became part of the execution cell called “The Beatles,” which apparently beheaded more than 27 hostages. Elsheikh had a reputation for waterboarding and crucifixions.
Sami Bouras, a Tunisian with Swedish citizenship, has planned suicide attacks and is a member of al-Qaida.
Shane Dominic Crawford is a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago. He’s believed to be fighting for ISIS in Syria and also acting as an English language translator for the group.
Mark John Taylor, the last man listed, hails from New Zealand and has been in Syria with ISIS since 2014. He’s encouraged numerous terrorist attacks against Australia and New Zealand via social media and propaganda videos.
