In the name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten, the loyal subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord King James, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, defender of the Faith, etc.

Having undertaken, for the Glory of God, and advancements of the Christian faith and honor of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the Northern parts of Virginia, do by these presents, solemnly and mutually, in the presence of God, and one another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil body politic; for our better ordering, and preservation and furtherance of the ends aforesaid; and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions, and offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general good of the colony; unto which we promise all due submission and obedience.

In witness whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names at Cape Cod the 11th of November, in the year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord King James, of England, France, and Ireland, the eighteenth, and of Scotland the fifty-fourth, 1620. –Mayflower Compact

The pilgrims were trying to get to the New World to start a new life in America, and their story took place in the 1600’s.

When the pilgrims got on a boat called Speedwell, they were ready to go to the New World in July of 1620. However, when they started their trip, they had to turn back twice because the boat leaked quite a bit. Finally, they started their trip again. However, this time they boarded a ship called The Mayflower. Over 100 pilgrims, including women and children, boarded the vessel for the New World.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

This was rather rare for someone to attempt to do because of pirates, bad storms, seasickness, and other things. However, nothing could stop the pilgrims from wanting to start a new life in the New World. During the 66 day trip on The Mayflower, they prayed, praised, worshipped, and trusted the God of the Bible to get them to their destination safely.

Finally, after 66 days of being on the Mayflower, they finally arrived at Cape Cod in November of 1620. Because of the time of the year they arrived at Cape Cod, almost half of the over 100 pilgrims that made the journey died because of the very harsh winter they faced. They did not have enough time to start building houses because it was so cold.

After the tragic winter, they went to Plymouth Rock.

When they arrived at Plymouth Rock, some Native Americans (they are called Native Americans because they were the first ones to be understood as native to America) befriended the pilgrims and taught them how to plant, sow seed and be able to survive.

A certain Indian named Squanto helped them a lot by showing them how to plant, garden, and sow seeds to reap a good harvest. The Indians were very good friends to the Pilgrims.

This is also why we celebrate Thanksgiving Day. On Thanksgiving, they had shellfish, lobster, turkey, cornbread, berries, deer, and other kinds of foods and gave thanks to the God of heaven for all He had provided. Sounds pretty good to me!

Have you ever paid close attention to the word, “Thanks-giving?” When they feasted on Thanksgiving, they gave thanks to God for being good to them by helping them through the Indians, namely Squanto.

Now, you will always know how the pilgrims came to America and you can better understand the real foundations of our great land.
