The Ugly Truth Behind Missing DC Black Girls

A sensational Instagram post claimed Thursday that 14 black girls had gone missing in Washington, D.C., over a 24-hour period. And the hashtag #missingdcgirls went viral.

Numerous celebrities, including Olivia Wilde, Bernice King, Taraji P. Henson, Sean Diddy Combs and LL Cool J latched on to the story, assuming that it wasn’t getting attention because America is “sexist” and “racist.”

Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles Lawson, wrote on Instagram, “It is a well known fact that a missing person of color Black, Latin or other do [sic] not get the media coverage equal to a missing white person …”

Bernice King (daughter of MLK) tweeted, “Sex trafficking/slavery is pervasive in the U.S. and world. Don’t label our #missingDCgirls as runaways and not search. #FindOurGirls.”

Actress Sophia Bush added, “FOURTEEN young black and Latinx girls woke up hopeful, ready to face the world and its ways yet again in DC. Today, each one of them is missing…#MissingDCGirls -> #FindOurGirls.”

Reading these posts, you would think Boko Haram had invaded D.C., but the story about 14 girls missing in one day turned out to be fake news!

There is a serious problem with missing black teens – especially girls – in Washington, D.C., but according to police, almost all of the youths are runaways.

Black members of Congress are calling on the FBI to investigate the large number of black and Latino missing children in our nation’s capital. According to the Associated Press, more than 500 cases of missing children and minors were logged by the D.C. Police Department in the first three months of 2017.

To raise awareness, Chanel Dickerson, the new commander of the D.C. Police Youth and Family division, began posting missing children alerts with pictures on social media. So far this month, they tweeted 27 missing person flyers of children and minors between the ages of 10-17, and many have been found.

The fliers got the community’s attention. A forum was held with black parents in D.C. Hundreds packed a room and lined up to speak to city officials. The meeting became heated, with people shouting at city leaders. The crowd demanded additional mental health services for children and juveniles, and some people expressed anger about the lack of Amber Alerts for these missing persons cases.

The focus by black parents, the black caucus, black activists and celebrities is on the failure of the police and media to bring more attention to missing children cases as opposed to addressing why these kids are missing in the first place.

Why is this?

It’s because dealing with the “why” will expose the ugly truth about the epidemic of anger and abuse taking place in most single, black, female-headed households. It’s easier to scapegoat than to face the real reason why black kids are running away from their mothers in droves.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser – a leftist Democrat – announced new initiatives including boosting the number of police officers and expanding the missing children website. She said every effort is being made to reunite these kids with their “families.”

Newsflash: These young people don’t want to be reunited with their mothers. They ran away from home to escape unbearable living conditions. Angry, single, black mothers (and grandmothers) who don’t have any love are raising these kids. These women are often belligerent and violent toward the children. The kids are usually living in homes where the mother has a live-in boyfriend. Illicit drugs are prevalent. Sometimes the girls are made to work as prostitutes in sex-trafficking rings – even by members of their own families.

Recently, a 15-year-old girl who had been reported missing in Chicago was gang-raped by a group of juveniles on Facebook Live. According to police, at least 40 people watched the video, and no one called the authorities. Officers later found the girl on the street and reunited her with her mother (no mention of a father).

Barack and Michelle Obama were outraged and brought international attention to the Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram, yet they’re silent when American girls (and boys) are being victimized.

For more than 27 years, I’ve counseled thousands of people through my nonprofit, BOND. In my book, “The Antidote,” I write about high-profile cases such as Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Tupac Shakur, Eminem, O.J. Simpson, Richard Pryor, Malcolm X and others who were abandoned by their weak fathers and traumatized by angry mothers. Black women can’t solve these problems, because they’re creating them by making their children angry with their impatient attitudes and hatred of the absent fathers.

Here are some sobering facts about what happens to kids raised without fathers:

  • 90 percent of homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes;
  • 71 percent of pregnant teenagers lack fathers;
  • 71 percent of high-school dropouts come from fatherless homes;
  • 63 percent of youth suicides involve children from fatherless homes.

This should be a wake-up call to parents and elected officials to focus on the real cause of missing and runaway kids. Unless we encourage them to forgive their mothers and return to their fathers, we as a society will continue to bear the horrific social consequences.
