Does anyone recall the fact that in less than 24 hours Vegas police cleared alleged Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock‘s girlfriend, Mary Lou Danley in the shooting, even though she was alleged to have been out of the country?
It was reported all over.
Now, after several timeline changes by the Clark County Sheriff’s office, Sheriff Joe Lombardo claims that he believes Danley is hiding something.
“There is a lot of people that have hundreds and hundreds of guns, but for this individual to do it at a certain point in time and to do it all with such robust action, you would think that Ms. Danley would have some information associated with that,” Lombardo told KLAS in a lengthy, two-hour interview.
“But currently we haven’t been able to pull that out of her, if it’s in her,” he added.
While Danley claimed to have been out of the country on October 1 during the shooting, Lombardo finds it hard to believe that she had no idea what was going on.
“It could have been prevented on many levels,” he said. “Marilou Danley, his brother, anybody that may have had some modicum of information that would have presented this individual’s state of mind, but apparently right now we don’t know that.”
“He’s gone up and down in his wealth, [being] associated with gambling and real-estate and everything else that he chose to do,” Lombardo said, echoing sentiments of investigators who claim money woes and a massive gambling debt led to the shooting. “But since September 2015, he’s lost a significant amount of wealth and I think that might have a determining factor on what he determined to do.”
Frankly, I’m not buying that. Why would money woes and a gambling debt drive a man to open fire on thousands of people, if in the end, he was just going to off himself? That makes no sense at all.
Still, Lombardo has held that she might have known more than she let on.
“We are continuing the investigation into that female,” Lombardo said the day after the shooting. “There are several questions that need to be answered.”
Those questions, according to Steve Gomez, a former FBI agent and now an ABC News consultant, will likely focus on the arsenal Paddock assembled to carry out the attack.
“How did he accumulate all of those weapons?” Gomez said. “Did she see him operating these weapons, training, working on these weapons? Did she know where he obtained these weapons? Were there associates that were obtaining the weapon for him? … Those are very important questions to answer.”
“She has probably the best insight into the mind of Paddock prior to him killing all these people,” Gomez said. “So they definitely want to hear from her what was going on in his life.”
Perhaps she is, but her being cleared so early on raised red flags with a lot of us as we reported on what was taking place.
I suppose we’ll wait and see what else changes in this ever-changing investigation.
