Do you know your history? Recently, our ministry, The Sons of Liberty, went on a trip out on the East Coast to speak at colleges, churches, radio interviews, etc. In the midst of doing all of our events, we also were able to visit some historical places as well, such as Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, Jamestown and Yorktown.

I am going to share with you the significance and the historical value of these places.

Independence Hall is where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States were birthed. The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 2nd of 1776. However, we celebrate Independence Day on July 4th because that’s when it was proclaimed to the people. This building is located Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

(Fast Fact: This is not only where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States were signed, but also where they were debated and drafted.)

Jamestown was the first permanent English speaking settlement in our American history. Those who came to America and established Jamestown, came in three ships named The Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discovery. By the time they got to America, many people died from lack of food, diseases, and exhaustion.

When they arrived, there were many Indians in the New World. They found a place where they wanted to make a settlement, which they named Jamestown. The Pilgrims, originally known as the Saints, arrived at Plymouth Rock 13 years later. As I mentioned earlier, Jamestown, which is located in Virginia, was the first permanent settlement of the United States of America.

Another important historical landmark in our history is the Liberty Bell. The Liberty Bell is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The significance of the Liberty Bell is that it was the bell that was rung to summon the people to hear the brand new writing of the Declaration of Independence.

(Fast Fact: Did you know that the first time the Liberty Bell was tested to ring, it cracked which is why that crack still remains in it?) Leviticus 25:10

Finally, Yorktown is where General George Washington and the Continental Army defeated the British after a long and bloody battle in the Revolutionary War. It was here where Washington surrounded the British completely on land and the French by sea. The French had been allies with Washington and his troops. The British were cut off by the French which was their only escape.

Washington’s brilliant idea to cut off the British worked! Washington completely surrounded them by land while the French stayed on guard by sea to make sure that the British would not go anywhere. The British were trapped! British General Cornwallis ordered the surrender. That was the end of the Revolutionary War, and America had won! That is the significance of Yorktown, Virginia.

I hope you learned a lot about your American history today.
