Coby Persin has been known for a plethora of YouTube prank videos. He is a social experimenter to see how people respond to certain situations. In fact, you could say he is a more modern version of candid camera. However, recently, he took on a social experiment that shows the dangers of social media to both teenage girls and boys.
Persin, 21, a self-described prankster, seems genuinely concerned about young people and so much so that he teams up with several young people’s mothers and fathers to point out the dangers of responding to requests to meet strangers on the internet.
First, take a look at the video he uploaded back on August 10, which has been viewed nearly 40 million times! It was about child predators that prey on girls.
Coby was permitted by the parents to message the teen girls can claim he was new 15-year-old boy in town and wanted to just make new friends. Three girls responded and agreed to meet him. Their ages? 12, 13, and 14.
What happened? Watch the video. You will be amazed at the naivete of these young girls.
One of the girl’s parents said, “What would have happened if you came out and it wasn’t us back here? We look at all these things together. What would you have done?”
Another girl’s father became emotional as he said, “I’ve already lost your mother. What would I do if I lost you, too?”
A month later, on September 16, Persin uploaded the boy’s version of the video.
Once again, Persin received permission from parents of three boys who were the same age as the girls to perform the same experiment with them. One of the boys had even viewed the video he made of the girls.
This time, Persin posed as 15-year-old Amanda Green. Within 24-hours of the first instant messages, these young boy were more than willing to meet “Amanda” and even enter a strange house.
Mothers and fathers alike chide their children and rightfully so. They love them and are concerned for them. However, there seems to be some kind of disconnect between the parents and the kids for them to do what they did.
“Jonathan, are you freaking kidding me? Do you even know where you are right now? You could have been killed,” said the 13-year-old’s mother.
Fourteen-year-old Jordan was dragged into the very same van as one of the girls by his father and a couple of Persin’s colleagues. He was rebuked for his foolishness by his father.
These are valuable videos in my opinion. They are teaching tools to remind us that the world is full of people who are hell bent on abusing and even killing young children. Our kids must be taught to have some “street wisdom” about their surroundings, what they do and who they engage with. Thank you Coby for the lesson!
