What Would Jesus Pack?

The gun debate took another twist when “evangelical” pastor, Rob Schenck stated, “I’m an evangelical preacher. You can’t be pro-life and pro-gun.”

Is he right? Do all Christian gun owners that claim to be pro-life need to go out and destroy their guns?  It is a shame that the topic of guns brings such unrest in our society, but yet, it does.  Guns are inanimate objects and do not have a mind of their own.  They are simply tools and like any tool, can be used for positive or negative activity.   Everything depends upon the action of the user.  Therefore, because guns are tools and neither moral nor immoral on their own, wouldn’t it be logical that they would be safest in the hands of evangelical Christians?  Evangelical Christians would be the last group of people to use guns for sinister or evil purposes because they genuinely care for people and their eternal destiny.

Looking back on many of the recent shootings in America, one would be hard-pressed to find an evangelical Christian that went on a shooting rampage.  In Oregon, it appears that Chris Harper Mercer, the shooter in Roseburg, Oregon, actually targeted Christians.  In Charleston, where nine were killed, there was obviously a racial motive and yet, we also see these victims were Christian people who loved the Lord Jesus Christ.  So, the question remains.  Can genuine evangelical, Jesus-loving people be pro-life and pro-gun at the same time?

Let’s go back 2000 years, back to when Jesus walked the earth.  First, we know He did not carry a gun.  They were not invented yet, but as far as we know in Scripture, He did not carry a sword or knife either, which would be the weapon of choice during His lifetime.  However, we do know that at least two of his disciples carried swords.   This is how many swords we are told in Scripture were available just before the crowd came to get Jesus for His trial.  Prior to Jesus finding out His disciples already had two swords, He advised them to sell their garment and buy a sword (Luke 22:35-38).

Wouldn’t it make sense then that Jesus recognized there were times when protection was necessary through weapons?  When Peter acted in haste at the arrival of the crowd, he took a sword and cut off the ear of the high priest’s servant, we see Jesus healing that man’s ear and then He states in Matthew 26:52, “…Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.”

The very clear teaching by Jesus is that weapons are not and should not be the first response of followers of Jesus Christ in every situation.

Now let’s return to 2016.  No true disciple of Jesus Christ is going to take up the sword (the gun today) with the possibility of taking another’s life, unless there is a dire need for this action.  There is evil in our world and that evil is not afraid to utilize guns to destroy.  No amount of laws in the books will be able to keep an evil person from taking another’s life, but if there is a person that sees evil about to take place and has the ability to intervene as a way of saving human life, then that person must act.  James 4:17 says, “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.”

If one has the ability to stop evil in its tracks, then to not act, according to the Bible, is sin.  This is true whether we are defending our family, someone else’s family, and even our country.   I am an evangelical Christian, and I am very much PRO-LIFE and PRO-GUN, what about you?
