Where Are The True Heroes?

According to Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary, a hero is defined as, “any man admired for his courage, nobility, or exploits, especially in war… any person admired for his qualities or achievements and regarded as an ideal or model.”

Our country is now at ground zero of a great spiritual war that has major personal, national and global ramifications in every level of human society. God is calling His men and women to rise to the occasion.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Conditions in America today are much the same as they were in Israel as recorded in I Samuel 13 & 14. The nation was suffering under a rebellious, disobedient and ungodly ruler, King Saul. Israel’s archenemies, the Philistines, had control of their technology and had successfully disarmed the Israelites, with the exception of Saul and his son Jonathan. Israel was under the heavy influences of pagan Philistine culture and religion. The frequent raids of the Philistines left the people of Israel economically decimated, intimidated and demoralized. The people of Israel were living as victims, not victors.

“When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits,” I Samuel 13:6

Some of God’s people back then, as in 2015, also had said, “If you can’t lick ’em, join ’em,” and defected to the enemy’s camp.

Jonathan was well aware of the desperate conditions of oppression, fear, defeat and immobilization among God’s people. He was sick and tired of it! Something had to be done now! He didn’t organize a committee to study the situation. He didn’t get permission from the corrupted leadership of his day to implement some feeble, ineffective strategy of compromise. He simply found a loyal partner, his armor bearer, to join him in what appeared to be a high risk combat mission no one else was willing to attempt. But nothing ventured is nothing gained.

“And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armor, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or few.” I Samuel 14:6

Jonathan understood important truth you and I need to understand in our day. The magnitude of the opposition of evil does not restrict God’s ability to help His people be victorious. The number of people in God’s army is insignificant, often times the fewer the better. God doesn’t need a lot of people to do a great work. He likes to do through the few! He just needs someone who will trust Him, obey Him and go pick a righteous and specific fight against just one part of a territory currently under enemy occupation.

Jonathan and his armor bearer stepped up to the fight when everyone else was afraid to do anything. Were these two men acting on a wild, foolhardy impulse or going on an obedient adventure of faith? Though there was great corruption in their national leadership (like today), great cowardice among Israel (like the professing church today), taunting and mocking by their enemies, Jonathan and his armor bearer made their past every obstacle and God mightily intervened!

The enemies of righteousness in their day were shaken, scattered, confused and brought to self-destruction. Those who had deserted Israel came back home to fight for the cause of the Lord, cowards became courageous and rose up to relentlessly pursue their enemies in battle.

“So the LORD saved Israel that day…”I Samuel 14:23a

These great victories took place because one guy, who was fed up with what was happening in his country, got another likeminded guy to join with him to do something specific about it in the will of God. And so it is today.

Jesus Christ, our ultimate hero, is waiting for and calling us to take action in His name by taking the unique path the LORD has prepared for us to overcome specific strongholds of the enemy.

Are you fed up with what Satan is doing among people and through people to destroy our nation? Then now is the time for you to rise up! Find a faithful, like-minded partner. Hear and follow what the LORD is saying to you. Go pick a fight in Jesus’ name and see what He will do!

Many years ago a godly warrior named A. B. Simpson wrote, “God is preparing His heroes. And when the opportunity comes, He can fit them into their places in a moment. And the world will wonder where they came from.”
