There’s been a lot of well-deserved contempt for Justin Trudeau over the use of wartime emergency powers, the freezing of bank accounts and use of mounted police, during the Ottawa protests, but it’s not really about Trudeau.
Trudeau is an idiot and has never had an original thought in his life.
This was a proposal presented to him and now the Liberal government and New Dems upheld it in the House of Commons by a margin of 185-151.
A basic democratic safeguard for such extraordinary powers would be to lock their use behind a 2/3rds majority, but that is clearly not the case.
The bottom line is that faced with a political crisis, the Liberals and their New Dem allies chose to resort to violent political repression in order to preserve their power. This is not just Trudeau, it’s a political establishment and a political system that is responsible for this.
Trudeau is and always was a not particularly bright puppet. It’s an establishment that did this.
