USA: pilot attempts to crash plane with 80 passengers
By: Voice of Europe, October 23, 2023:
In the US a pilot on an “Alaska Airlines” flight from Everett, Washington, to San Francisco attempted to crash the passenger plane, even though he was off duty, as reported by BILD.
The suspect, later identified as 44-year-old Joseph David Emerson, had taken a seat in the cockpit on what is known as a Jumpseat, a folding seat for crew members. In a turn of events, he tried to shut down the aircraft’s engines.
The on-duty pilots acted swiftly, overpowering the alleged perpetrator, removing him from the cockpit, and restoring the safety of the passengers.
One of the present pilots informed air traffic control about the incident and requested police presence upon landing in San Francisco.
Subsequently, the aircraft was diverted to Portland, Oregon, where Joseph David Emerson was apprehended. He now faces 83 counts of attempted murder, according to police documents.
