AG Jeff Sessions Resigns – Is Trey Gowdy Next AG Appointment?

You knew it was coming.  In fact, one wonders what took so long, but Attorney General Jeff Sessions has resigned.  Of course, it is being portrayed as a resignation, but everyone knows that behind the scenes the pressure was mounting to oust Sessions who has been an impotent AG. Now, the question is, will Trey Gowdy be the next AG appointment by the president?

We know that pressure was put on Sessions to resign due to his letter.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

“At your request, I am submitting my resignation,” wrote Sessions.

Sessions was very gracious in his letter, thanking President Donald Trump for the opportunity to serve and for having been a part of an administration that “restored and upheld the rule of law.”

NBC reports:

Given the bad blood, Sessions’ departure after the midterms was no surprise.

Trump was asked about Sessions’ future at a lengthy press conference Wednesday afternoon. At the time, he declined to comment on whether Sessions would be leaving the administration, although Sessions resignation letter had been submitted earlier in the day.

“I’d rather answer that at a little bit different time,” Trump said, adding that he was “looking at different people for different positions.” He commented that Cabinet-level changes were “very common after the midterms.”

Trump named Matthew Whitaker, Sessions’ chief of staff, as acting attorney general. Whitaker is now set to oversee special counsel Mueller’s probe.

Whitaker, a U.S. attorney in the Southern District of Iowa from 2003-09 and Sessions’ chief of staff since late 2017, was a conservative legal commentator. He wrote an opinion column for CNN before joining the Justice Department titled “Mueller’s investigation into Trump is going too far.”

Let’s see how Whitaker does in the coming days.

There has been much talk about appointing former congressman Trey Gowdy to the position, but so far, that has not been realized.

For one, I’m glad to see Sessions out.  Now, let’s start talking about dealing with Robert Mueller and his ongoing witch hunt, as well as actually engaging in investigations into criminal representatives in the House and Senate.

President Trump indicated that he could “play that game” with Democrats too.

“If the Democrats think they are going to waste Taxpayer Money investigating us at the House level, then we will likewise be forced to consider investigating them for all of the leaks of Classified Information, and much else, at the Senate level. Two can play that game!” he tweeted on Wednesday.

Basically, DC is in gridlock and that isn’t such a bad thing for the American people, but grab your popcorn because my guess is that the fireworks over the next two years are going to be far more entertaining than anything we’ve seen in the previous two.  The heads of the Democrats are already unhinged, just wait till they explode.

Here is the full text of Sessions’ resignation letter.

Dear Mr. President,

At your request, I am submitting my resignation.

Since the day I was honored to be sworn in as Attorney General of the United States, I came to work at the Department of Justice every day determined to do my duty and serve my country. I have done so to the best of my ability, working to support the fundamental legal processes that are the foundation of justice.

The team we assembled embraced your directive to be a law and order Department of Justice. We prosecuted the largest number of violent offenders and firearm defendants in our country’s history. We took on transnational gangs that are bringing violence and death across our borders and protected national security. We did our part to restore immigration enforcement. We targeted the opioid epidemic by prosecuting doctors, pharmacists, and anyone else who contributes to this crisis with new law enforcement tools and determination. And we have seen results. After two years of rising violent crime and homicides prior to this administration, those trends have reversed—thanks to the hard work of our prosecutors and law enforcement around the country.

I am particularly grateful to the fabulous men and women in law enforcement all over this country with whom I have served. I have had no greater honor than to serve alongside them. As I have said many times, they have my thanks and I will always have their backs.

Most importantly, in my time as Attorney General we have restored and upheld the rule of law—a glorious tradition that each of us has a responsibility to safeguard. We have operated with integrity and have lawfully and aggressively advanced the policy agenda of this administration.

I have been honored to serve as Attorney General and have worked to implement the law enforcement agenda based on the rule of law that formed a central part of your campaign for the Presidency.

Thank you for the opportunity, Mr. President.

Sincerely,
Jefferson B. Sessions III
Attorney General
