Therefore, consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off. (Romans 11:22)
I recently had a meeting with a denominational president in which I was led to warn him that if the Christian church does not play an active part in returning this nation to its moral foundations, we are quickly trending toward judgment and destruction. Unfortunately, he did not think that it would ever come to that. I told him that “If the church does not end abortion in this country, God will. And if He is forced to do it, it is not going to be pretty.” Christian leaders need to understand that if it comes to that, the church and especially the spiritual leaders, will be the first to experience that judgment. [See Ezekiel 9:6; 1 Peter 4:17]. His response was typical of many religious leaders today. “I believe God will take care of us.”
As I drove home, I kept hearing the same message. “Peace, peace when there is no peace.” This word comes from Jerimiah 6:14 when Israel’s spiritual leaders (the priests and prophets) were also prophesying that God would never destroy their nation even though their nation was allowing the systematic slaughter of their children. I believe that America is being given one last chance to turn this around and that many of the things we are experiencing, (from plagues to natural disasters), if they are not a judgment from God, then it is at least one final set of warnings to this nation.
In an article titled “Why Is America Being Hit by So Many Horrific “Natural Disasters” All of A Sudden?” Michael Snyder asks “Could it be possible that someone is trying to get our attention?”
It is sad when our Founding Fathers seem to have a greater understanding of the nature and character of God than today’s spiritual leaders.
Consider the following:
“We ought to be no less persuaded that the [favorable] smiles of Heaven, can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right, which Heaven itself has ordained.” -George Washington’s First State of the Union Address
“Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that his justice cannot sleep forever.” -Thomas Jefferson on slavery
“A nation cannot be rewarded or punished in the next world, so they must be in this. By an inevitable chain of cause and effects, Providence punishes national sins by national calamities.” -George Mason, Father of the Bill of Rights
“Revelation assures us that: ‘Righteousness exalts a nation’ [Proverbs 14:34]. Communities are dealt with in this world by the wise and just ruler of the universe. He rewards and punishes them according to their general character.” -Samuel Adams, Father of the American Revolution
“The Supreme Governor of the world rewards or punishes nations and civil communities only in this life… Political bodies are but creatures of time. They have no existence as such but in the present state; consequently, are incapable of punishments or rewards in the future. We can conceive no way in which the divine being shall therefore manifest the purity of His nature… towards such societies but by rewarding or punishing them here, according to their public conduct.” -Congressional clergyman Chandler Robins, 1791 before the Massachusetts Legislature
As I explained in my “America Sermon” nearly 10 years ago, America is faced with the same choice as every nation that has ever preceded us. A choice between Obedience and Disobedience, Good and Evil, Light and Darkness, Life and Death, being Blessed or being Cursed.
“See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess. But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them, I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed.” -Deuteronomy 30:15-17
