America: Land of the Potential Terrorist

This morning, The Department of Homeland Security issued a nationwide terror warning advisory suggesting that the nation is facing an increased threat of domestic terrorism. People angered over Covid-19 restrictions, for example, or people who think the election was stolen, are of course, considered top suspects. To be fair, they did mention groups who are angered over excessive use of force by police. This specifically means Antifa. Other potential terrorists are those opposing illegal immigration and those who may have been emboldened by the January 6 siege of the capital building.

The left has been attempting to portray conservatism as an extreme ideology for years. At the beginning of the Obama administration DHS published the report Rightwing Extremism:
Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment, attempting to portray veterans, gun owners and other patriot types as potential terrorists. They were forced to admit, however, that they had no intelligence suggesting any of these groups were planning on conducting any type of attack.  For further reading on the government’s attempts to portray conservative ideology as extreme see the New American Foundation policy paper Patcon: The FBI’s Secret War Against the Patriot Movement.

Slowly but surely, the so-called war on terror has been inching its way to our own shores. After decades of inundating the public with images of Islamic terrorism, it is relatively easy to get people to create an association between what they fear and the alleged threats the government tells them they are facing. The following is from an article I wrote in 2018 entitled Associationism: Replacing Islamic Terrorism with Right-Wing Extremism.

What is Associationism? Obviously, as the term implies, associationism refers to how human beings learn by associating ideas. According to Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy the ideas of associative learning can be traced back to David Hume’s Treatise of Human Nature. Hume’s theory elaborated on how a person’s perceptions are influenced by previous experience. Furthermore, Hume believed that there was no idea that existed in a person’s mind that was not first shaped by a previous experience. Associative theories of learning were later expanded on by Ivan Pavlov when he developed his theories on classical conditioning. Essentially, it was discovered that trained responses to a given stimulus can be replicated by simply replacing one stimulus with another.

What does this have to do with right-wing extremism? Well, stop and think a moment. For nearly two decades now we have been inundated with images of Islamic terrorism (stimulus) which provoked feelings of fear and panic. This stimulus was accepted by the American people due the nature of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. Slowly and ever so surely, this stimulus is being replaced with suggestions of right-wing extremism. This, because of the already preconditioned perception of terror, is easily provoking the same preconditioned response. The question remains as to whether or not the powers that be understand this and are deliberately changing the stimulus.

This should be concerning to all Americans, not just white, right-leaning conservatives. The National Defense Authorization Act of 2012 authorized the executive branch of government to indefinitely detain anyone considered to be a potential threat to the United States. Despite having a Republican administration this law is still in effect. Is it possible that so-called right-wingers who cling to the traditional ideals the nation is founded upon could be rounded up as extremists and indefinitely detained in detention camps? Well, if we continue down the road we are on it certainly is possible. We are on a road of orchestrated chaos and political mayhem. Paid opposition groups like Antifa are clearly trying to provoke the right into conflict. The left has demonstrated its ability to use violence to push a point. If this continues, the country could possibly see violence on a much larger scale. This would be the needed excuse to round up all whose values do not align with the state. Is this a very likely scenario? This writer tends to have more faith in the American people and believes that the vast majority of us understand this and will not fall for it. You have to wonder though. Why else would they attempt to portray the people that love the country the most as potential terrorists if not to get rid of us?

Another way to explain this is through the process of stimulus-response conditioning. In my article Stimulus-Response, Associationism and Fake Rightwing Extremism  I said the following-

The association of ideas, otherwise known as Associationism, or associative theories of learning, suggests that people’s ideas are shaped and guided by past experiences. In other words, if the constant shock of Islamic terror has the right effect on the psyche of the population then it will not be difficult to create a mental connection between those memories of terror and the attitudes portrayed as right-wing extremism. Another way to explain this is through the stimulus-response mechanisms discovered by Ivan Pavlov. Classical conditioning is the process in which an organism is trained to respond to a certain stimulus. In Pavlov’s experiment, it was found that the organism in question, a dog, would salivate every time meat was present and it was fed. Slowly, a bell was introduced at feeding time and eventually the salivation would occur simply with the sound of the bell even though the original stimulus was removed. The dog began to associate the sound of the bell with the presentation of food which at this point, his response became a conditioned behavior. Over the past eight years, we have seen a refusal on the part of the Obama administration to refer to Islamic terrorism as Islamic in nature. Instead, it has been referred to as a type of hateful ideology that leads to violence. The shock of constantly being fed images of terrorism while hearing the words “hateful ideology” has led to the masses reacting to those same words in much the same way Pavlov’s dog reacted to the bell. In other words, fake rightwing extremism is being created through mental trickery and the association of ideas. Through the stimulus-response mechanisms, people are being conditioned to react with emotion and fear as opposed to reason. The fear of right-wing extremism is being created through the images of actual terrorist events and the refusal to label them what they are while at the same time, gradually connecting words like hateful and racist with the right-wing movement.”

Where does this leave us now? Donald Trump was supposed to save us from the deep state and the discrediting of American ideals. Yet, here we are facing the same radical agenda we originally elected him to defeat in 2016. Some believe the so-called siege at the capital was the catalyst that enabled the left to label Trump supporters as extremists however, there is plenty of circumstantial evidence suggesting Trump himself was playing a role that was intended to split and discredit the Republican party. Many people refuse to consider this as a possibility. It certainly is a hard pill to swallow but you have to look at the reality of the situation. That is what happened.
