Another Liberal Professor Calls for Hate Crime Punishment against Those Flying the Confederate Flag

It’s one thing to protest and petition loudly enough about racism and slavery to the point that Southern States are removing the Confederate battle flag, desecrating graves, and abolishing confederate monuments. It’s one thing to protest so loudly that companies respond by ceasing to produce and sell Confederate battle flags. It’s one thing to protest loudly enough in an attempt to cause an entire era of American history to be forgotten or rewritten. Those are bad enough. However, it is another thing entirely to call for making the Confederate flag a hate crime by designating it “America’s swastika” and pushing for punishment. Nick Bromell, professor of American studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, opines for just that.

Writing an opinion piece in Salon, Bromell states, “It is a fine thing that the Confederate flag will no longer fly above the South Carolina state capitol. But displaying the Confederate flag anywhere is, at bottom, an act of hate. It should be recognized as such, and punished as a hate crime.”

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, as liberals just can’t seem to comprehend facts, there is a huge difference between the “Confederate flag” or Stars and Bars and the Confederate battle flag. As someone pointed out in a comment to a previous article, the Confederate battle flag is a saltire of Saint Andrew’s Cross. Liberals wrongly refer to the battle flag as the “Stars and Bars.” They wrongly identify the battle flag, which was the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia, as the Confederate flag. Before they begin their tirades, it would behoove them to know the difference when speaking.

Bromell writes, “The heritage these flags stand for was a bloody war initiated by the South. Those Southerners who fired the first shot to attack US troops at Fort Sumter — just a mile or two from the church where Roof gunned down nine black worshippers — aimed not only to ‘defend’ slavery, but to promote slavery’s spread across the nation, especially in the West. The defeat of the South was the defeat of the slavery system.”

The memo missed Bromell informing him that slavery is still alive and well, even here in the US. Slavery exists in Africa, where women in Niger are born into “slave” castes. It still exists in the Middle East, where Islam enslaves “infidels” on a regular basis. Many sources contend that slavery exists in every country in the world — which means it is present in the US. Forced prostitution and forced migrant labor are the forms of slavery most encountered here in the US. In fact, the federal government has made “slaves” of the states and the people through their piling higher and deeper the federal debt — we are the chattel of the government.

And, yes, the South did fire the first shots at Fort Sumter. However, this little tidbit of a read may shed some light on the conflict as well as this one. The one firing the first shot is not always the one who initiates war. Interesting it is that taxes/tariffs seem to be the prominent issue. Looks like Southerners weren’t “defending” slavery as hotly as some claim.

While Bromell exudes an arrogant northern supremacy, he would do well to remember that slavery existed in the north as well and many northerners made hefty profits over selling and trading slaves.

According to the Daily Caller:

Bromell defends his call by citing the words of escaped slave and abolishionist Federick Douglass, who lamented in 1871 that “covert, insidious, [and] secret” hatred continued to exist in the United States and was far harder to defeat than the military rebellion of the South in the Civil War. This lamentation on hatred, Bromell says, makes him feel “confident” that Douglass would agree with him on banning the flag.

Historical context offers some reason to doubt Bromell, because in addition to opposing slavery Douglass was also a fierce defender of free speech as one of America’s premier rights.

“No right was deemed by the fathers of the Government more sacred than the right of free speech,” Douglass wrote in 1860. “Liberty is meaningless where the right to utter one’s thoughts and opinions has ceased to exist. That, of all rights, is the dread of tyrants. It is the right which they first of all strike down. They know its power. Thrones, dominions, principalities, and powers, founded in injustice and wrong, are sure to tremble, if men are allowed to reason of righteousness, temperance, and of a judgment to come in their presence.”

Bromell accuses “Americans who refuse to acknowledge the connection between the Confederate flag (referring to the battle flag, not the Stars and Bars) and the horrors of slavery and white supremacy” of continuing to be in the “grip” of some “malignant spirit” passed down through the generations since the end of the war to the present day. He contends, “Given the millions who suffered under the whip of slave masters, and all the families separated as slave traders sold sons and daughters away from their parents, and wives away from their husbands, all Americans should recoil from the Confederate flag with the same horror we feel for the Nazi swastika.”

Again, northerners, as well as African natives, participated heavily in the slave trade. It’s about time that is recognized as occurring under the “Stars and Stripes” emblem of the US and then the northern states during the War to Enslave the States. Someone needs to knock this arrogant Yankee Doodle Bromell off his high-horse and bring him back to reality. For if the contention is all southerners were “slave owners,” one assumes, using the same logic, that all northerners were slave traders.

Another tidbit that needs recognizing is Democrats were the ones who perverted the meaning of the Confederate battle flag by raising it during the Civil Rights Movement — a move perpetrated by Democratic politicians and political segregationists. Fact is, most all liberals are Democrats. Maybe they are trying to erase and hide their bad behavior.

Not all Southerners during the time of the War to Enslave the States owned or kept slaves and many were against slavery. Many southern families were small farmers, living off the land to support themselves or worked for large land owners and became known by Southern wealthy landowners as “white trash.” Such is the southern legacy for many, arising to the stereotype of barefoot, ignorant, illiterate and poor. Truth is, liberals can’t decide whether Southerners were wealthy slave-owners or barefoot, ignorant, illiterate, poor people incapable of cleaning an outhouse.

Bromell equates the flying of the Confederate battle flag, originally used to rally troops during a battle in a war over states’ rights, to the horrors of the Nazi swastika — originally a peaceful symbol perverted by the Nazis that came to symbolize oppression, anti-Semitism and murder.

Bromell, in his “wisdom,” does not realize “free speech” protects the Nazi swastika here in America, much like walking on the “Stars and Stripes” in protest (which is disrespectful), burning of crosses, and Nazis marching down the street, even when used for hateful purposes and reasons. He is suggesting that the flying of the Confederate battle flag and the flag itself, a rally for troops supporting states’ rights, is not deserving of the same protection as the Nazi swastika. In other words, Bromell suggests limiting free speech in a nation founded upon freedoms outlined in the First Amendment for some while maintaining it for others.

If the display of the Confederate battle flag is in Bromell’s words “at bottom, an act of hate,” to what could the promotion of killing innocent babies in the womb be equated?” It certainly does not amount to an act of love or concern over “women’s health” as cried by Democrats. It amounts to mass murder one at a time. What would Bromell say about walking on the Stars and Stripes? Is that not considered an “act of hate?” Maybe individuals walking down the street waving the Nazi swastika flag and wearing swastika armbands shouting anti-Semitic remarks calling for the murder of individual different from them might trigger Bromell to call that an “act of hate.” This liberal contends “acts of hate” are a “hate crime” deserving of punishment under that designation.

The left liberals display an inane amount of hypocrisy. They have no difficulty supporting murder of babies in the womb, rallying to protect individuals who walk on the American flag, defending the modern day Nazi, who calls for blacks and Jews to be murdered, backing Islamists who call for the murder of infidels, and supporting a tyrannical government. Yet, this left liberal professor calls for hate crime punishment against those who fly a Confederate battle flag while others marginalize Christians.

This entire hullabaloo over the flag with its interpreted meaning of slavery and racism borders on insanity as it has far surpassed the “incredibly stupid.” All of the uproar means to quell freedom of speech, silence the opposition that opposes tyrannical government, erase embarrassing history and oppress the States and people everywhere with “white guilt” and “white privilege.” In other words, this boils down to another means to persecute a sect of the population and further divide Americans.

It is a hallmark of Communism to change history, skew it to justify atrocities then erase what is unsavory in their eyes while persecuting those who oppose the oppressive nature of the ideology.

There are reasons many of us Americans cling to our guns, our Bible, and our religion, and hold fast to remember our history and heritage. It has nothing to do with slavery, racism, “white privilege” or “white guilt.” It has everything to do with upholding individual God-given rights, preserving freedoms and states’ rights while keeping guard against tyranny, oppression and persecution.
