Anti-Theist “Minister” Demonstrates Only a Fool Claims “There is No God”

The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. –Psalm 14:1; Psalm 53:1

In our post-modern world, we have people throwing around titles for themselves and placing labels on others. This can be troublesome for some, as they feel as though they have something to live up to with the label placed on them by others, as if they have to be this or that because they are “X.” The trend has not skipped hitting the church. This guy is a “Calvinist,” and this guy is a “Premillennial Dispensationalist.” But, what about the guy, John Shuck, who claims to be an “atheist minister”?

Christian News reports:

A Presbyterian USA minister in Oregon who says that he doesn’t believe in God—and doesn’t require his members to believe either–remarked in a recent article that he is offended by those who assert that he is not a Christian.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Now, do not misunderstand me. I do believe that a person can be whatever he wants if he puts his mind to it, but everything has its limits. He cannot fly off a cliff without assistance. He cannot be blue by wishing it so. He cannot grow to be taller than God has determined.  Trust me, I have tried. I’m still 5’3”. But the one thing you cannot be and that is an “Atheist Christian.”  A Christian without faith is not a Christian.

“The concept of ‘God’ is a product of myth-making and ‘God’ is no longer credible as a personal, supernatural being,” he wrote in a blog post on his site “Shuck and Jive.” “Jesus may have been historical, but most of the stories about Him in the Bible and elsewhere are legends.”

Now, it can be a little irritating when people dismiss things offhanded like Shuck does here. He wants to have the ability to say that these things are not true as if this is an accepted fact. They are legends. How does he know? Well, he just does, I guess. It is funny how atheists act about the Scriptures. It’s as if one day Darwin got everyone to think. Those stupid ancients, theologians, early Newtonian scientists. None of them thought about this stuff until “Pastor Shuck” came along and straightened them out.

Thank Go…um… well, sure glad he started thinking.

No, this man wants his title, and he wants the notoriety that comes with it, but I wonder if this supposed “pastor” knows what the Bible says about people like him? I do not think that he would be so brazen about his avid unbelief if he knew the judgment that awaits such false teachers.

He further states his frustration with being told he is not a Christian

“[E]ven though I hold those beliefs, I am still a proud minister. But I don’t appreciate being told that I’m not truly a Christian,” he stated. “Many liberal or progressive Christians have already let go or de-emphasized belief in Heaven, that the Bible is literally true, that Jesus is supernatural, and that Christianity is the only way. Yet they still practice what they call Christianity.”

What Shuck fails to recognize is the fact that those he holds up as examples are not good ones; they do not help his case. Progressives and Liberals are not Christians. Those who hold that the Bible is not the wholly, inspired Word of God are not Christians. Those who reject the Scriptures as being infallible, do so, because they lack faith, just as the Westminster Confession of Faith says:

Chapter I, Paragraph 5

  1. We may be moved and induced by the testimony of the Church to an high and reverent esteem of the holy Scripture; and the heavenliness of the matter, the efficacy of the doctrine, the majesty of the style, the consent of all the parts, the scope of the whole (which is to give all glory to God), the full discovery it makes of the only way of man’s salvation, the many other incomparable excellencies, and the entire perfection thereof, are arguments whereby it doth abundantly evidence itself to be the Word of God; yet, notwithstanding, our full persuasion and assurance of the infallible truth and divine authority thereof, is from the inward work of the Holy Spirit, bearing witness by and with the Word in our hearts.

You see, we do not define what it means to be a Christian Mr. Shuck, the Scriptures do.  If we deny the very standard to be the standard, then we have now taken ourselves out of the conversation. I am afraid that you will find yourself wishing you were never born.

And whoever receives one such child in My name receives Me; 6 but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.

“Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes! – Matthew 18:5-7
