Mayor Sheng Thao is contemplating the implementation of a fee for other cities if their homeless residents relocate to Oakland.
In an interview with The San Francisco Examiner, the mayor raised the possibility of this proposal, which is currently in its preliminary stage. How it would be implemented or enforced has not even been discussed at this point.
Still, the idea behind the fee is to serve as a deterrent for other cities, discouraging them from sending their homeless population to Oakland. Additionally, the fee aims to help recover some of the expenses incurred by Oakland on programs and initiatives for the homeless.
This is an idiot’s idea of how to fight a civil war. But maybe other cities can charge Oakland an impact fee for all of the garbage that comes out of the Bay Area.
Thao had said, “I am very open about calling out the cities and saying, ‘You need to do more for your unhoused residents. Otherwise, you can pay me, you can pay this city, the city of Oakland an impact fee because you’re impacting our city. And we could take it on. However, we can’t serve everyone.’”
No one can.
And how would Thao enforce her fee? She could threaten to bus foreign homeless back to their cities unless they pay their impact fees. That would provide Oakland with a revenue stream when everyone flees. But other cities could respond by busing the homeless back to Oakland. And then our social services system can be replaced with a giant busing operation. That would probably be an improvement.
