This past weekend, Democrat presidential candidate “Bernie” Bernard Sanders (I-VT) made an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press to discuss the campaign with Chuck Todd.
During the course of their interview, Todd asked Sanders to talk about recent comments that House minority leader Nancy Pelosi made seeming to denigrate Sanders’ position on raising taxes. Pelosi argued that some of Bernie’s ideas were simply far-fetched, including his promise to raise everyone’s taxes and to move the nation to fully socialized, single-payer healthcare.
“We’re not running on any platform of raising taxes,” Pelosi said during a press briefing to launch the Democrats’ yearly issues conference in Baltimore, Md. “We do want to have a fairer tax system, and … we hope that we can do that this year.”
Pelosi also argued that Sanders was being unreasonable with his healthcare demands as well.
“He’s talking about a single-payer, and that’s not going to happen. I mean, does anybody in this room think that we’re going to be discussing a single-payer. I’ve been for single-payer for 30 years, and it is a very popular idea in our country. But we have made a decision about where we’re going on healthcare…
We have a very realistic plan that’s out there. Can it be improved upon? Everything can. But it’s no use having a conversation about something that’s not going to happen.”
Chuck Todd wondered what Bernie thought about her comments and the sense that Pelosi was pulling for Clinton instead of Sanders. Sanders defended his plans, but then chose to go on the offensive and remind Democrat voters that his crazy ideas aren’t the problem – the real problem is Hillary Clinton.
Bernie Sanders: Chuck, Chuck, let’s look at the facts.
The facts are that we are spending far more than other countries on healthcare. My proposals will save middle class families thousands of dollars a year…
Most people tell me they would be happy to pay $1,000 more in taxes, if they are going to be paying $5,000 less in healthcare premiums.
So, you know, this is an issue where we have got to control healthcare costs…
We have got to take on the drug companies who are ripping us off, and the pharmaceutical companies…
I think in fact that Hillary Clinton will be the problem, it is our campaign that is generating the excitement – energy – that will result in a high voter turnout.
Bernie’s right, though (Not about his ideas – those are insane): Hillary Clinton may well be the kind of candidate that can single-handedly devastate the Democrat Party’s chances in 2016. Not just their chances at winning the White House, but she could wreck their entire national campaign. Democrat voters don’t like her and they don’t want to vote for her. If the Democrat Party forces their voters to choose between her and whichever Republican happens to win the GOP nominating race, many Democrats will stay home and the Party will not only lose the White House, but they’ll lose important Senate and House races as well.
