“The greatest danger to the church today is not humanism, paganism, atheism or agnosticism. The greatest danger is not increasing hostility against our faith from the culture. Our greatest danger is apostasy on the inside, arising from false teachers- theological liberals who deny and distort biblical doctrine and lead others down the same path.” ― Mark Hitchcock
When Billy Graham was asked by Larry King “What about those faiths, the Mormons, and the others that you mentioned that believe in Christ. They believe that they will meet Christ, what about those like the Jews, Muslims, who don’t believe?” he replied, “I can’t be their judge.”
Larry King asked, “You don’t judge them?”
Billy Graham said, “No! My calling is to preach the love of God and the forgiveness of God.”
For the life of me, I do not understand the unscriptural irrational of Billy Graham when he stated what he did.
Scripture is clear.
“Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.” -Matthew 23:23
Charles Spurgeon was spot on when he said, “To overlook judgment because of kindness is ridiculous, then love wounds itself by killing justice.”
Friends, God is love.
“He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” -1 John 4:8
Everything Jesus did was motivated by love. Therefore, when Jesus was rebuking the Pharisees it was out of love that He was doing so (Matthew 23). When He was healing the sick (Acts 10:38) and raising the dead, it was out of love that He did what He did (John 11:43).
Love is all-encompassing when it comes to the heart of our exemplar, Jesus Christ.
We cannot say that it is not love when we rebuke, correct, instruct (2 Timothy 3:16), or give forth the Father’s words concerning His judgments. He is the judge (Deuteronomy 4) and we are commanded to preach His word.
“Evil men understand not judgment.” -Proverbs 28:5
If Billy Graham was born of the Holy Spirit (John 3:6) and understood the operation and leading of the Holy Spirit (John 16:8; Romans 8:14), he would not contradict the Spirit of God.
Yet, if you look to the Grahams, both the father and the son, you can see clearly that they have acted accordingly. They are not a threat to the powers of darkness, or the establishment that everyone seems to be complaining about, both in the past and in the present. In fact they are loved by the very ones that they fail to warn (Hebrews 9:27).
Consider that Billy Graham counseled every US president since Harry Truman, who did not trust him.
Billy Graham has counseled presidents in what, might I ask? The Graham’s have acted more like political stand-up puppets, or controlled opposition in order to put the Church back to sleep while both he and his son approve of the sins (1 John 3:4) of the administrations that they are allegedly counseling and publically supporting (1 Kings 13:31).
Look at when the message was changed and who it was that was preaching it. Billy said he was called “to preach the love of God and the forgiveness of God.”
The message is “Repent for the kingdom of Heaven is at hand” (Matthew 3:2), and forgiveness is given to them that repent (Luke 17:4).
Look to the decline of the United States since the 1960s, the attack on our Christian-Constitutional heritage, the removal of prayer, the sanctioning of the murder of the unborn, the attack on the institution of marriage between a man and a woman, an attack on education to that of indoctrination etc. (Psalm 94:20; Amos 3:3).
Yet, there you would have found Billy, or now in his stead that of his son Franklin in support of the same or similarly wicked administrations, that have in fact advocated crimes through their lead and approval against the Lord and against man.
- Divorce is up 117%
- Violent crimes are up 794%
- Illegal drug use
- Teen Pregnancies- Voluntary abortions 61, 628, 584 since 1973
- Illiteracy rates reported that over 700,000 students graduating from High school every year could not even read their own diplomas.
I am not saying that the Grahams are to be faulted for all of these statistics. The Church, as a whole, is (Matthew 5:14) to be faulted. Yet, I ask, where are the protests (Matthew 16:18), the call to action concerning these crimes against humanity?
“Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.” -Matthew 5:13
The problem here is with the American Christians. They took their eyes off of the Christ (Hebrews 12:2) and put the Grahams in His stead (Exodus 20:3-5).
Furthermore, the American Christians have let the Grahams set the temperature of the Church, and it is not as near to being as hot as it should be.
Revelation 3:15-16 tells us “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.”
“And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.” -Hebrews 1:7
My wife’s grandmother was 98-years-young when she passed. When she was alive, I used to dig into her treasure of wisdom as I sat as her beneficiary. I asked her what it was that she was subjected to when she would go to Church. She replied, “All the way up until 1962, it was the law and the prophets every Sabbath day (Jeremiah 6:16).”
She was saying the messages were about the condemning of sin through the use of the law (Deuteronomy 25:1). In other words, there was no tolerance for anything that transgressed God’s moral law (Exodus 20; Psalm 119:11; John 3:16; Galatians 3:1).
“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men;” -2 Corinthians 5:10-11
Again scripture is clear:
“by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.” -Proverbs 16:6
Friends, scripture again comes to my aid in contrast to what Billy Graham said about judgment,
“And they shall teach my people the difference between the holy and profane.” -Ezekiel 44:23
“And what cause soever shall come to you of your brethren that dwell in your cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and judgments, ye shall even warn them that they trespass not against the Lord, and so wrath come upon you, and upon your brethren: this do, and ye shall not trespass.” -2 Chronicles 19:10
How is the Lord known?
“The LORD is known by the judgment which he executeth:” -Psalm 9:16
“Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne. A fire goeth before him, and burneth up his enemies round about.” -Psalm 97:2-3
“But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.” -Jeremiah 9:24
Case in point: God judged Sodom and Gomorrah because men failed to preach and live faithfully in dealing with the wicked (Deuteronomy 4:6; Matthew 5:20).
In the New Testament
“Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?” -Luke 3:7
Like that of Martin Luther, I must say that I write what I am writing because “I am not permitted to let my love be so merciful as to tolerate and endure false doctrine,” and what the Grahams advocate for and support in many ways, through action and inaction, is not a threat to the kingdom of darkness but a leading to it (Matthew 7:13). It’s not even a reproof (Ephesians 5:11), which the Church is commanded to do.
Furthermore, I will state what Billy was unwilling to state, Jesus is the only way.
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'” -John 14:6
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” -Acts 4:12
To preach otherwise is to found to be a false witness (Proverbs 14:25).
How many times throughout Scripture have we been warned of those that the world loves (1 John 2:15)? The word of God is clear:
“Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.” -Luke 6:26
