Blind Faith!

As I write this article, I am sitting on an airplane headed for Alaska.  For the first time ever, we are doing ministry events in the great state of Alaska and bringing the truth of the Gospel to all those who will hear.  Just a little bit after we took off, I looked out the window and noticed the plane shaking on the side and thought about how I am having faith in this airplane. I am having faith that it will bring safely to where I need to go, have enough gas to get me there and most of all, I am trusting in the pilot whom I have never met before. I did not interrogate him first and ask him what kind of grades he got in pilot school (Because I certainly don’t want a C student or worse flying my plane) or even where he earned his degree.  I am having blind faith in a total stranger, a plane I have not thoroughly examined to make sure all is working properly, and the fact that someone didn’t forget to fill the gas tank!  That’s pretty nuts if you think about it, but that is what we do.

Think about it, when you go to a restaurant to eat food, do you meet the cook first to see if he washed his hands before he started cooking and cleaned all of his cooking apparatus or is not greasy himself before he starts your meal? Of course not, no one does that, but when you really stop and think about it, that sounds like it would be a pretty smart thing to do!  You don’t know the cook who is about to prepare the food you are going to put into your gullet, but you have faith that it’s not going to make you sick or worse. Do you trust God that way? Isn’t that sad?  We have more faith in complete strangers who are infallible than God who is infallible and who holds the world in His hands.  Why do you think that is?

The Bible tells us in Proverbs 3:5-6 to “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.”  But yet how many of us really trust Him?  He who will not ever leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5 & Deuteronomy 31:6) and we have a problem believing in Him?  What a slap in the face.  We trust in an airplane pilot and a cook in many cases more than we trust in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Shame on us!

I know trust can be a difficult thing. Walking by faith is not easy, but remember, as Christians we are to walk by faith and not by sight. (2 Corinthians 5:7)  Some of you reading this article right now may be in a difficult situation where you are at a loss for what to do, or you may be in a place where you feel like the Lord is calling you to do something.  Yet, you are having a hard time trusting in Him to take that step of faith and do it.  Listen, the Lord does not call the equipped, He equips the called (And that’s not some cheesy “church” saying).  It really is true.  If God is calling you to do something (Even though it is difficult, cause it more than likely certainly will be), He will be faithful to give you the grace and strength you need to do it.

I always pray that the Lord will work out all things together for good to those that love God and to those who are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28) And I believe in Jesus’ name that it is true.  It’s God’s Word, and God is not a man that He should lie. So, the next time you are tempted to trust in man rather than God, remember, it is only He who will never let you down.
