Can The Republicans Fight Evil With Evil?

For those of you who followed my writings you may have wondered where I have been since I wrote: How Many Child Deaths Will It Take?  I have to admit that it surprised me to see that was written in November of 2021.  I have been wondering that myself: “Where ya been Steve?”  Actually, I have been wondering that about everyone:  You, me, and the country.  Frankly, COVID has not been our finest hour.  Some of you who have followed my other articles may have figured out that I am an Emergency Medical Technician.  Actually, besides being an EMT during the COVID thing, I was also the Chief of the Ambulance Service where I worked at that time.  Everything that had happened to healthcare, and has continued to happen, has been terrible; and during that time, I have just not always known what to say.  I joined the service to help people and make a difference, and healthcare has actually hurt people and many do not seem to care.  So, for the last year, I have been listening and thinking.  I figured when God had something for me to say, I would know it.

I am not alone in this.  Many people have gotten burned out and quit.  Many times, I have felt like leaving healthcare, but I have stayed hoping to make things better.  Like many EMTs, I left my department and went to where things are better.  I understand when people say “Stay and fix things,” but in healthcare, it has become: “their way or the highway.”  However, there are certain things in which I will not participate.  If I have to violate myself to keep helping others, in reality I am not helping others.  Our health matters, too.  You cannot help the patient by becoming the patient.

Some will say, “Steve, what does this have to do with the “Republicans Fighting Evil with Evil”?  Well, actually a lot.  So, here is what got me thinking about this.  Yesterday, I went to a Republican convention.  I have been involved in the party for more than 20 years and consider many people there my friends.  However, I point out to people that being my friend does not prove a politician is smart or honest.  My friends are what they are, and it is what it is.  That does not mean I will associate with vile people but I think in life, we improve each other.  I can think of a lot of friends that are dead and gone that have made me a better man because of what good people they were, and being their friend made me better.

At one point in the convention, I made the comment that the Republican Party had no problem attacking people that were too conservative and that wanted too much of what Republicans claimed they wanted.  Even though they attacked those that wanted what Republicans claimed they wanted, they never attacked Mitt Romney or Mitch McConnell.  The speaker said that was because it is still better having Mitch McConnell running the Senate than having Chuck Schumer running the Senate.  My response was that I would rather have Chuck Schumer running the Senate because it is better to have our enemies coming across the battlefield to attack us, instead of in our foxhole stabbing us in the back.  My friend made it clear that he thinks that no matter how bad Mitch McConnell is, he is still better than Chuck Schumer.

I consider them both evil.  So, this brings me to the question: Can the Republican Party fight evil with evil?  It is a legitimate question because for more than 20 years I have been told “Choose the lesser of two evils.”  Many people have been doing that and they need to ask what that has accomplished.  Obamacare was patterned after Romneycare.  Yes, as in Mitt Romney.  Also, the Republicans never repealed Obamacare when they had a majority.  Frankly, I cannot remember the Republicans ever fixing anything.  Many of them admit that and then blame the Democrats.

This brings me back to why I started the article the way I did.  For much of my life, I have been boots on the ground.  I was Army, Air Force, and Emergency Medical Service.  Instead of running my mouth, I wanted to run to the problem and help fix it.  The problem with COVID is that many Republicans were just as bad as Democrats.  The reality is that we had bad government.  It was bad before COVID and COVID just made it easier to see.   We are running out of time.  The longer we allow this to continue, the harder it will be to fix.

Remember trickle down economics?  Basically, President Ronald Reagan said if the rich are doing well, we all will do well.  That is debatable and I will save that for another day.  My point is that I believe in trickle up morality.  Many people are waiting for the right leader to fix things.  I believe the leaders corrupt the people, and the people corrupt the leaders.  The leaders are going to do what we let them do.  The leaders are really the head follower.

As a Christian, I look to the Bible for my answers . In Mathew 28:18, Jesus said: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”  This tells me that people claiming the earth is the devil’s do not believe what Jesus said.  However, God gives us free will, and if we use that freewill to give the devil power, that is our fault, not God’s.  If we use our freedom to choose the lesser of two evils, we have chosen evil.  That is our sin, not God’s mistake.

We are self-governed.  We have a Constitution that is the supreme law of the land.  We choose who works for us in elections.  The claim that we have no control is not true.  It is pointing out our mistakes, not our authority.  As Christians, we should look to the Bible for what kind of leaders to put in office.  Romans 13:3 says: “For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval.”  People misunderstand this as requiring us to obey wicked rulers.  If the ruler is wicked, they are not God’s servant, and if we allow them in positions of authority with no consequence for their lawlessness, then neither are we because our servants work for us.  If they do not follow the Constitution, then they are criminals, not our servants.

Many people fail to read further in Romans 13:9-10:

For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.”

Just because someone wins an election does not give them any authority to force us to sin or to sin on our behalf.  If our leaders sin, it just proves we hired the wrong leaders.  If I hire a trucker to be the lead truck in a convoy, it does not mean I give him the authority to steal what is in his truck or anyone else’s truck.  He has been hired to do the job I told him to do.  No more, no less.  If I hire someone to break the law, I have broken the law.  They work for me and I am responsible for their behavior.

Romans 13 does not give a ruler the authority to decide what is good or bad conduct.  Romans 13 specifically tells us the commandments are law and our need to be the fulfilling of the law.  Allowing the people we hire to let Planned Parenthood kill babies is not loving those babies as our neighbors.  Allowing the schools to corrupt children’s minds is not loving those children as our neighbors.

I do not agree with my friend that the most important thing is for the Republicans to keep the power from the Democrats. Power only matters if it is used for good. If not it is the people’s duty to take the power away, and hire leaders that will use it for good.

As to the title question of this article, I will leave you with Romans 12:9 and 21.

Let love be genuine. Abbor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.”

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

The answer to the question is NO.  The Bible is clear:  If we want to overcome the evil of this country, we better start hiring good people to do good things.  There is no lesser of two evils, just evil.  Between now and the next election, start talking to your employees and tell them for whom they work and what they need to do.  If they will not listen, hire someone who will.
