Counterfeit Christianity: I Am Not Perfect, Just Forgiven

“A counterfeit Christianity always wants to drop down to the imperfect and adjust itself to the popular mind. But a real Christianity ever seeks to be made perfect in God.”

First off, there are many Christians who are Christians in theory, and they are worldlings in practice.  Just look to their fruitlessness (2 Peter 2:21). These understand not Scripture when it comes to grace. “But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound (Romans 5:20; Ephesians 2:8-10).  They are enemies of the cross for they have never repented from their sins (Matthew 3:2; Exodus 20; 2 Corinthians 7:10-11).  This we know if we are among those who are born anew of the Spirit because we do that which the Spirit leads us to do (John 3:3; Romans 8:14). Christ is the standard, not their excuses.

Does it not amaze you, and even offend you, when people try to use the grace of God as an occasion for the flesh (Galatians 5:13)?  They love to look for excuses for their imperfections.  They say that they are not perfect, just forgiven. Really? No wonder why no one can take them seriously! Yet, they are perfect sinners, and they love to have it so.

Let’s take a look at an unregenerate man as a parable for a moment, shall we (2 Corinthians 2:14)?

You go into a gym where you see posters all over the walls of Mr. Olympia and body builder champions and you see these little skinny guys staring up at the posters.  Those who are on the posters started the same way in hopes of becoming what they also beheld.

Is the one that wants to become Mr. Olympia looking for excuses? Not at all! If he were, you could tell by his lack of growth and his disproportionate body. You could see that he doesn’t eat right, train right, etc. He is, in short, just a counterfeit and does nothing more than try to speak the language of excuses as to deceive not only himself, but also others that are sincere (1 John 4:5).

These counterfeits also like to use metaphysics (Abstract theories), humanistic terms (Outside of Scripture), positivisms and the such.

Scripture tells us: “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.”

In Matthew 7:23 it tells us, “And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”

Friends, Christianity is not the product of human reasoning because reason is an enemy to faith. Christianity is a divine intervention. Reason is what moves us out of God’s country, per se, and moves us into the enemy’s land. Christians belong in the supernatural realm, the miraculous realm, the overcoming realm.

As a matter of fact, it is this low standard of what is accepted as Christianity that is responsible for much of the shame and sin and wickedness in the world.

These that look to another Gospel are reaping the curse and would have you go with them (Galatians 1:8).  They are believers that do not believe.

The sincere seeker is looking for every opportunity to conquer (Romans 8:37) excuses for sin (Proverbs 14:12).  For if not, he will never attain his desire. In fact, it is not really even a sincere desire of his heart.

Yet, again, you hear from these counterfeit professors as if perfection is some sort of curse word. IT IS SCRIPTURAL (Genesis 17:1)!

“No Christian should make excuses for his own imperfections but should recognize them as failures to keep the command of Christ, and strive earnestly to overcome them. Perfection is the goal.” -A.A. Allen

1 John 2:4-6 tells us, “He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.  But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.  He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.”

Remember, “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments: and His commandments are not grievous” (1 John 5:3).

The sincere have their eyes fixed on what it is that they will to become (Hebrews 12:2), and nothing stops them in the process (1 Corinthians 15:58). They are immovable, adamant, perseverant and determined (Isaiah 50:7; 2 Timothy 2:5; 1 Peter 1:9).

You can look to anyone that is a success to understand this simple principle.

These that seek to be made perfect, both in the natural and in the spiritual, are not looking for excuses.  Rather, they are looking for perfection (Psalm 138:8; Philippians 3:12) and for growth in grace.

“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” -2 Peter 3:18

“Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:” -Colossians 1:28

What happens when my eyes are fixed on Christ?  What is the result by the Holy Ghost? I become just like Him. Just like the man in the gym who seeks to become Mr. Olympia who keeps his eyes fixed on the poster of what he wishes to become.

Furthermore, “He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as He walked” (1 John 2:6).

He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. -1 John 5:12-13

In 1 John 3:8 it tells us, “He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.”

John G. Lake said, “… Christianity did not go into the world apologizing. It went to slay the powers of darkness and undo the works of the devil, and it lived in holy triumph.”

Conclusion: Many counterfeits, wresting Scripture, will say, “Aren’t you being judgmental?”  I answer: “No, I am just using the Judge’s word to reprove, to correct, and to instruct in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).

To those who are taking heed to this short article, I admonish you and exhort you to stay the course.  The Holy Ghost is working in you (Titus 3:5).
