This should be a bombshell, right?
But my cynical side says that the mainstream media will simply paper over the story like they do with most everything else that makes the Obama administration look bad. In fact, while CNN does mention that the White House was pressuring Hagel to release more of the Gitmo detainees, their headline is a much more Obama-friendly “Releasing Gitmo detainees was the right decision.”
White House officials pressured Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel to increase the pace of detainee transfers from the U.S. prison in Guantanamo Bay, the outgoing secretary acknowledged to CNN’s Barbara Starr in an interview Friday.
Those comments come just one day after reports surfaced that a Guantanamo detainee released as part of the deal that freed American POW Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl may have sought to return to militant activity.
“Not everyone at the White House has agreed with me,” said Hagel of his methodology for deciding on detainee releases.
One has to wonder why the White House is involved in this process at all. Isn’t the point of having a prison to hold these terrorists so that they can be monitored until they are no longer a threat? So wouldn’t it stand to reason that the people doing the monitoring along with the people handling the actionable intelligence from the prisoners’ friends be in the best position to decide when they should be released? The White House isn’t in Cuba monitoring these terrorists, and they aren’t handling the intel on their former comrades. They shouldn’t be getting involved other than to ask how things are going.
Political pressure like this is a big part of the reason we are being forced to fight these prisoners over again after releasing them back into the world. (And the Bergdahl trade will be no different…)
