The Duty to Defend Life

When you study the history of the world, some of the most perilous times for any people are when a regime change takes place. For example, France experienced its most bloody century from the time of its godless revolution through the Napoleonic wars, the Republic, then back to Emperor, on to another republic, to the Commune, and so forth. Every time there was a regime change it meant grave danger for the life, liberty, and property of all the citizens.

I believe we are approaching, if we are not already into, a major regime change; not just in our land but around the world. Ben Fulford reports:

“There was also a major geopolitical tectonic plate shift in the Middle East last week when Turkey and Russia announced a gas pipeline would be built through the Black Sea, connecting these two countries. There was also a major nuclear power deal announced. What this means is that a NATO member country, with the most powerful military in the Middle East, just broke ranks with the cabal. The Turks are also on very friendly terms with the Iranians… The satanic cabal is suffering a series of catastrophic defeats. Like a snowball gradually turning larger, the removal of a few cabalists is now turning into an avalanche of losses for the cabal. The removal of Pope Maledict and the abdication of a several European royals is now being followed with the removal of key cabal power brokers in the United States…The other big sign that it is not business as usual in Washington is the fact the US Congress passed legislation [Dec 4, 2014] that amounted to a declaration of war against Russia but this was ignored by both the military and the media. It means the cabal bribed fools in Congress have been removed from any real power.”

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Where this leads and how this unfolds is hard to tell. But one thing is certainly taught by studying regime changes in the history of the world—they are usually dangerous times, dangerous to our lives our liberties and our property. Does God’s Word give us any instructions for such a time as that? Well yes it does, it is the Sixth Commandment. “Thou shalt not murder.” At first glance, it might not appear that this negative commandment would have anything to do with what we should do in a crisis.

The Positive in the Negative Commandment—Exodus 20:13 “Thou shalt not murder.” Compare the Eighth Commandment—Ephesians 4:28 “Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.” So the negative Commandment has positive expression in working instead of stealing and in giving to those in need rather than stealing. So, in a similar manner, the Sixth Commandment, although stated in the negative, has positive application – and that application is that we have a duty to defend life. And that is no mere speculation on our part because Scripture gives us a clear command regarding our duty to defend life.

Proverbs 24:11-12 “If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain; If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works”?

We have a duty to defend life—that means we have a duty to defend our own life, unless called to lay it down in a greater cause. The default position is that we defend our lives against those who would unjustly take our lives. Now, of course, there are exceptions, times and places where our Lord would call upon us to lay down our lives, even though unjustly taken. In the two thousand years of the Church, untold millions of Christians have been martyred for their faith in Christ.

We also have a duty to defend the life of all those who are under our care. As husband and a father, I have a God-ordained duty to defend my wife and children against any who would attack them, any who would seek to unjustly take their lives. Who do you have a duty to defend? Love always protects.
