What Does the First Amendment Mean?

“The liberty of the press is indeed essential to the nature of a free state: but this consists in laying no previous restraints upon publications, and not in freedom from censure for criminal matter when published. Every freeman has an undoubted right to lay what sentiments he pleases before the public: to forbid this, is to destroy the freedom of the press: but if he publishes what is improper, mischievous, or illegal, he must take the consequence of his own temerity.” -William Blackstone

What does our First Amendment say and mean? Well, as you can see, today we are going to talk about the First Amendment and what it means. The First Amendment states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

The freedom of religion means that we can worship the God of the Bible anywhere we want to, whenever we want to, without fear of being thrown in prison, or possibly killed. In other words, we have the liberty to gather together to worship Jesus Christ and also to conduct ourselves in public and private after His teachings.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

We also have the freedom to say lawfully what we think should happen or what we think is not right publicly if need be. This is called “free speech.”

We also possess the freedom to print things in the newspaper. We can print things that we want people to know about and understand, but it must be truthful.

We also have the right to gather peaceably to talk about an issue we believe is wrong and protest the government if need be.

We have the freedom of religion, speech, press, and assembly. We have the freedom to do what we want to do lawfully. Like I have said before, we do not have the freedom to do what we want to do by breaking the law (i.e. printing lies in the newspaper, saying that which is untrue in the media, breaking God’s Ten Commandments etc. – Exodus 20). We have freedom when everybody is obeying the law (namely, the Law of God).

Christian men, women, and children in other countries, do not have the freedoms we have. They do not have the freedom of speech like we do. If they speak their mind, they could easily be arrested and put in jail for years, tortured, and even be killed. They also don’t have the freedom to worship God as the Scriptures and their consciences dictate. If they serve God how they want to, or even serve Him at all, they are persecuted and at times killed. They also do not have the freedom to write things in the newspaper that they want to. Most of all, they do not have the freedom to assemble and worship God. Christians are now starting underground churches so that those who wish them harm won’t know.

My point is, we in America have so much to be grateful and thankful for. People in other countries don’t. Some people would do anything to have a Bible. If you do not believe me, check out the video at the bottom of this article.

I hope that you now have a better understanding of the First Amendment and the freedoms that we have and enjoy. If you enjoy the freedoms that you have, then you will fight for America. Besides, if our founding fathers did not fight off the tyrant King George, we would not have the freedoms we have today. Fight for America!
