France Demonstrates Why Carson’s Remarks Concerning Muslims is so Important

When people hear the comments about a Muslim president, made by Ben Carson they usually cringe.  No one really likes the idea that some, for whatever reason, would be excluded from holding office in our country.  But now that he has begun to back off a little on his statement, one has to wonder if he is not exactly right; more importantly, that he should be free to say it.

Breitbart reports:

Marine Le Pen, leader of France’s Front National (FN) party, will stand trial over historic comments she made comparing Muslim street prayers to the wartime occupation of France.

Marine Le Pen’s former lawyer and FN party treasurer, Wallerand de Saint Just, has confirmed prosecutors in Lyon will send her to trial on 20 October on charges of inciting racial hatred, reports the Evening Express.

Just as in America, the remarks made by Le Pen, a politician, angered some people.  However, most important for us to realize, they were called “criminal.”  This public figure stands accused of inciting racial hatred.  So, what exactly did she say and why is it important.

Breitbart continues:

Le Pen made the comments during her 2010 campaign to take over the FN’s leadership from the party founder, her father, Jean-Marie Le Pen. According to France 24, when addressing a rally of supporters in Lyon she said:

“I’m sorry, but for those who really like to talk about World War II, if we’re talking about an occupation, we could talk about the [street prayers], because that is clearly an occupation of territory.

“It is an occupation of sections of the territory, of neighborhoods in which religious law applies – it is an occupation. There are no tanks, there are no soldiers, but it is an occupation nevertheless, and it weighs on people.”

Okay.  Is it possible that these five-year-old statements were a little insensitive?  Possibly, but were they “criminal?”  That is, should she be prosecuted for saying what she did in public?  Well, it seems that French officials believe that she should.

Breitbart adds:

After the initial investigation into Le Pen’s comments was closed in 2011, the case was reopened in 2012 following a legal complaint by a rights group. She was then put under formal investigation in July 2014, after immunity granted her as a member of the European Parliament was removed following a vote requested by French authorities in 2013.

The trial for “inciting discrimination over people’s religious beliefs” has been described as “a scandal” by Le Pen.

So, we have to get to two questions.  First, was what Le Pen said inciting discrimination over religious beliefs? Second, what has this to do with Carson’s Muslim statement?

If we look at the effects of Le Pen’s statement, we can easily see that this was not the case.  Even if we throw out the obvious fact that most who would have heard the speech did not like Muslims to begin with, there is still the fact that there seemed to be no reaction to what was said.  No violence was done towards Muslims praying in the streets.  And violence against Muslims did not rise after the speech.  It seems Le Pen incited nothing.

More importantly for us is the second question.  You can see from the reaction to Carson’s answer that this is the type of law that the Left wishes to impose on Americans.  You cannot say anything about anyone at any time.  If you have a contrary opinion about a person’s beliefs, then you are inciting hate.

The left will make sure that you agree with them, at least outwardly.  They are only intolerant of intolerance.
