Hell Fire Preaching… Where Is That In The Scriptures? It Isn’t!

“The people who go to Hell deserve to be there. People who go to Heaven do not deserve to be there. The first is justice, the second is grace.”

Often, when on the road preaching across the country, I will run into those who preach a fear of Hell rather than the fear of God (Proverbs 16:6).

They preach repentance towards hell rather than repentance towards God, friends, this is unscriptural.

This is all a part of a different Gospel that we were warned of in Scripture (Galatians 1:6-8).

We are to fear God, not Hell.

“But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.” -Luke 12:5

Let me explain…

It is true that when a man/woman chooses to sin that he/she made a choice (Deuteronomy 30:19): He/she is not sick, nor did the devil did make him do what it is that he/she chose to do (James 1:14).

We also know that when a man/woman so chooses to commit the sin, which is transgression of God’s moral law (Exodus 20; 1 John 3:4), that the act is not apart from the actor. The persons ends up in Hell, not the sin independently of the actor.

God’s moral law shows us our sin.  The law exposes our sins before God (Romans 3:20), which drives us to Christ where it can do no more (Galatians 3:24).

As Augustine righty stated, “The law detects, grace alone conquers.”

Also, keep in mind that our sin is before God (Luke 15:18; Acts 20:21) and when the Holy Ghost uses the law as a schoolmaster to drive us to Christ, He brings the conviction of sin, righteousness and judgment (John 16:8-10), which brings us to godly repentance (Mark 10:17-27; John 8).

“Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.
For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.” -2 Corinthians 7: 9-11

Friends, Hell is mentioned 54 times (King James version) in the Bible, 31 in the Old Testament and 23 in the New Testament. Hell is for those who reject Christ in continuing in their sins (John 8:24), not Christ rejecting them.

It is true that Jesus would identify Hell in many places found in Scripture.

“Where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched,” -Mark 9:48

“There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” -Luke 13:28

In Luke chapter 16, Jesus identifies a rich man who ends up in Hell and pleads to warn his brothers about the place of torment that he is now held captive for eternity (Luke 23-28).

But when we put the Gospel in its rightful place, we can see clearly how the Lord puts things into scriptural perspective,

“They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.

And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.

And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.” -Luke 16:29-31

Hell is the consequence of unrepentant sin before God, and Hell is where they go for rejecting His love and mercy (John 3:16). Real grace and understanding says:

“The people who go to hell deserve to be there. People who go to Heaven do not deserve to be there. The first is justice, the second is grace.”
