So where is Jesus? Not the Jesus that has been grossly misrepresented for the most part by the historic and contemporary religions who profess to worship Him. Not the Jesus who is acknowledged as a good man, an ancient teacher of sorts whose life was tragically cut short. Not the Jesus portrayed by the visual artists of long ago and today. Not the channeled “Jesus” of some New Age mystic.
Where is the real Jesus, the only begotten Son of God, the Christ, the Messiah, the Savior of the world?
He came to be here
on earth for about 33 years, the Son of God, the Word made flesh, dwelling among us, revealing the true heart of God the Creator and Father. During those years His true identity was questioned, challenged and disputed…mostly by corrupt religious and political leaders. Why was He here? What was He doing? His presence irritated demons. His word cast them out. He loved the loveless. He helped the helpless. At His touch sicknesses, diseases and lifelong infirmities vanished without a trace. He spoke truth with a superior authority that amazed His friends and angered and disarmed His opponents. He died in agony with a bloody shredded back scraping against a brutal Roman cross. His cruelly torn body, nailed through at His wrists and feet, absorbed the multitudes of our iniquities, paying the full penalty of our sins.
His lifeless body was laid in a borrowed tomb for 3 days during which time He raided hell and death and took the keys. Death and the grave could not hold the Source of Life. He arose! He appeared to hundreds! About 40 days later He ascended to the right hand of the Father—the place of highest authority in heaven and on earth. After 10 more days He sent the Holy Spirit to empower His followers to clearly declare and demonstrate the story of stories, the true story of Jesus and His love.
But where is Jesus now? Is He just hanging out in some distant spatial dimension known as “the right hand of the Father” keeping a close eye (or maybe not) on what’s going down here on earth? Where is He? He is with and in His servants, His sons and daughters, those who believe Him, receive Him, love Him, obey and follow Him. He is their Good Shepherd (John 10). As their leader and protector, He goes before them, preparing the way ahead. They go where He is (Matthew 28:18-20). In fact, Jesus Christ is so present with His faithful servants that when they speak others hear His voice, when they are seen He too is seen, when they touch someone He touches them too.
He is found
with His servants in plush and plain, devastated and dark, places. That is where He sends them. Jesus is right there in hospitals, prisons, homes of orphans and widows, families and broken families, pagan festivals, nursing homes, main streets and mean streets and exclusive streets, back alleys, offices, factories, sports events, bars and restaurants, churches, construction sites, refugee camps, small towns, big towns and country sides. He is found in disaster zones, war zones and comfort zones. He attends weddings and funerals. He is present with the lonely and broken. Jesus is never on the scene as a casual observer, but as the most powerful and gracious activist in the universe. He is there as the truth, the life-giver, the healer of deepest wounds, the giver of hope, the only way of freedom, the true lover and the most faithful friend.
Have you joined in the amazing adventure of being where He is? Are you regularly seeing Him reveal Himself to people you meet every day, doing mighty things only He can do for them through you? Let Him send you somewhere He is today. You will never go there alone!
