Earlier this week, I received a commentary for another site I edit for by a Christian author who claimed that God is not the cause of hurricanes and “natural disasters.” Instead, he said man was the cause.
He wrote, “God is constantly being blamed for things that are not his fault. This includes natural disasters such as Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma. God is not the cause of natural disasters. Man is.”
I called him to repent, even though I understood where he was trying to go with things by saying that because Adam disobeyed God, he brought us all into a world that was then cursed.
While that is true that Adam’s choice brought all mankind into an estate of sin and misery, those curses were given by God. They didn’t just happen because Adam disobeyed God. They were direct punishments issued by God.
This week, actor Kirk Cameron, 46, spoke from the Orlando, Florida airport with a more biblical line of reasoning as to what takes place with natural disasters.
“How should we look at two giant hurricanes coming back-to-back like this?” Cameron said. “Do we write them off as coincidence? Do we write it off as a statistical anomaly? Wow! Who would’ve thought? Is it just Mother Nature in a bad mood? I don’t know how you think about it but I think it could be something much more than all of that.”
Cameron said that hurricanes are “a spectacular display of God’s immense power” and he didn’t send them without reason.

“When he puts his power on display, it’s never without reason,” he said in a video he posted to Facebook. “There’s a purpose. And we may not always understand what that purpose is, but we know it’s not random and we know that weather is sent to cause us to respond to God in humility, awe and repentance.”
This is in stark contrast to my Christians friend’s comments and those of actress Jennifer Lawrence who blamed “Mother Nature” and Donald Trump.
My friend said that God did have the power to stop hurricanes, but left undone the fact that God is in control of every single thing in the universe.
The Bible is clear that God is in control of all things and that things of this nature are a demonstration of His wrath that’s revealed everyday from heaven.
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; -Romans 1:18
The Scriptures are full of references to God’s sovereignty over destruction and calamity. The history of the Great Flood, that was the greatest disaster man has ever known and guess what? While men were sinning and rebelling against God, God was the one that “caused” the Flood to destroy them and judge them.
One that stands out to me the most is Amos 3:6
Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?
Then there’s this passage about His full control over His Creation.
“The LORD possessed me at the beginning of His way,
Before His works of old.
23“From everlasting I was established,
From the beginning, from the earliest times of the earth.
24“When there were no depths I was brought forth,
When there were no springs abounding with water.
25“Before the mountains were settled,
Before the hills I was brought forth;
26While He had not yet made the earth and the fields,
Nor the first dust of the world.
27“When He established the heavens, I was there,
When He inscribed a circle on the face of the deep,
28When He made firm the skies above,
When the springs of the deep became fixed,
29When He set for the sea its boundary
So that the water would not transgress His command,
When He marked out the foundations of the earth; -Proverbs 8:22-29
Furthermore, Cameron points to Job 37:13, stating that God “causes [storms] to happen for punishment, or to water His land and demonstrate His faithful love.”
One of the things about the story of Job is that it is God that commands Satan to go and do what he does to Job and His family. Satan didn’t just come up with the idea for it, and God did it to both show the faithfulness of Job and glorify Himself in teaching Job about Himself.
“Remind them that God is the blessed controller of all things,” Cameron said. “He is the one who gives us peace, security and strength in the midst of the storm and that he uses this to point us to him and to his care for us.”
Indeed, even in the midst of things like the destruction left by a hurricane, God still shows His mercy and love to mankind. Take a look in Texas and you will see that many lives were spared and how the community has come together to help one another while in other places around the word, they lack the means to do so and thousands are killed in the same scenario.
“What this should be doing for all of us is causing us to remember that it’s God who supplies our life, breath and everything else so that you and I would reach out to Him,” he said. “So think about that, maybe share that with your kids when they ask why this is happening.”
Of course, ignorant people claimed that Cameron was saying God “murders” people without understanding that God is the Creator and judges with just judgment.
The message is clear though that God’s wrath will not always sleep. It does awaken.
If we are those spared in the midst of such disasters, we should humble seek His face and His forgiveness and repent. This is how Jesus told the people they should respond to when calamity occurred.
There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? 3I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.4Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? 5I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. -Luke 13:1-5
